California wins two events while at WVU

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (April 23) – The California (PA) men's track & field team posted a pair of victories and reached 12 league-qualifying standards while at the Mountaineer Showcase hosted by West Virginia over the weekend.

Junior Noah Bernarding (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) registered the fastest time in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) this season in the 800-meter run while at WVU. He won the event by nearly 2.5 seconds and set a personal record after crossing the finish line in 1 minute, 51.57 seconds. Bernarding boasts the top time in the league this spring by nine-hundredths of a second.

Freshman Brendin Marks (Chantilly, Va./Chantilly) captured the victory over the weekend in the triple jump. He won the event while setting a season-best distance of 13.71 meters (44-11.75 feet) on his first attempt, plus finished third in the long jump with a mark of 6.93 meters (22-9.0 feet).

Senior Ethan Moyer (Harlyesville, Pa./Souderton) set a personal record and placed second in the javelin throw with a heave of 54.56 meters (179-.0 feet) on his third attempt. Junior Bryce Washington (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) finished third in the shot put at WVU with a PSAC-qualifying distance of 14.06 meters (46-1.5 feet).

Freshman Daniel Munro (Brookhaven, Pa./Penncrest) established a season-best height and placed second in the pole vault after clearing 4.45 meters (14-7.25 feet) on his first attempt at the height. He now ranks fourth in the event on the league's performance list this outdoor season.

In addition to Bernarding, senior Mason Jobe (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) set a personal record in the 800 meters over the weekend when he finished third overall with a time of 1:54.92. Sophomore Ian Zimmerman (Bedford, Pa./Northern Bedford County) improved his conference-qualifying time in the 1,500-meter run at WVU by crossing the finish line in 3:59.57.

Senior John Franklin, Jr. (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) and Munro both reached the league standard in the 110-meter hurdles. Franklin placed third in the finals with a time of 15.63 seconds and Munro posted a time of 15.91 seconds during the preliminaries.

Senior Avery Boea-Gisler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Serra Catholic) and freshman Aidan McMahon (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) posted conference-qualifying times in the 400-meter hurdles over the weekend. Boea-Gisler finished second in the event with a time of 54.16 seconds and McMahon set a season-best time of 57.28 seconds. Senior Jalen Cloud (Leechburg, Pa./Kiski), who was making his 2023 debut, qualified for the league championships in the long jump with a distance of 6.89 meters (22-7.25 feet) on his third attempt.

The Vulcans return to action next weekend when they compete at the Penn Relays and the Paul Kaiser Classic hosted by Shippensburg.
