MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (March 18) – The Vulcans reached six league-qualifying marks and earned a pair of victories on Saturday while opening the spring season at the Stan Romanoski Open hosted by West Virginia.
Junior
Noah Bernarding (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) claimed the win in the 800-meter run and qualified for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships at the event. He crossed the finish line with a time of 1 minute, 56.79 seconds to win the race by over six seconds. Bernarding also placed fourth overall in the 1,500-meter run after posting a time of 4:15.79.
Sophomore
Logan Pfister (Fishertown, Pa./Chestnut Ridge) reached the conference standard in the high jump on Saturday. He cleared a height of 2.00 meters (6-6.75 feet) on his second attempt at the height. Freshman
Brendin Marks (Chantilly, Va./Chantilly) qualified for the league championships in the long jump after finishing second overall with a distance of 6.94 meters (22-9.25 feet) on his second attempt.
In the opening meet of the spring season, senior
Ethan Moyer (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) posted a heave of 52.83 meters (173-4.0 feet) in the javelin throw to reach the PSAC standard and place third in the event. Junior
Bryce Washington (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) qualified for the league championships in the shot put with a distance of 14.11 meters (46-3.5 feet) on his second attempt.
Senior
Mason Jobe (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) posted a pair of top-five finishes while at WVU. He placed second behind only Bernarding in the 800 meters with a time of 2:02.97 and finished fifth overall in the 1,500 meters at 4:22.02.
Senior
John Franklin, Jr. (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) posted a PSAC-qualifying time of 15.62 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles to finish third overall. Classmate
Kristopher Lytle (Columbia, Md./Atholton) placed fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.83 seconds.
The Vulcans also earned the win in the 4x100-meter relay on Saturday with senior
Tyrese Canada (Richmond, Va./Henrico), freshman
Steven Graves III (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township), Lytle and Marks posting a time of 42.93 seconds, claiming the victory by over one-tenth of a second.
Cal returns to action on Saturday, March 25, when it competes at the Bethany Invitational.
