LEWISBURG, Pa. (Feb. 25) – The California (PA) men's track & field team scored in three events and qualified five entries for the finals in the opening day of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships on Saturday.
Freshmen
Daniel Munro (Brookhaven, Pa./Penncrest) and
Jonathan Thrush (Temple, Pa./Muhlenberg) both received All-PSAC status while making their debuts at the track & field championships. Munro placed third in the pole vault after clearing a height of 4.45 meters (14-7.25 feet) on his first attempt at the height. He became the school's first All-PSAC honoree in the event since the 2012 outdoor campaign. Thrush finished third in the 5,000-meter run on Saturday after crossing the finish line third overall with a time of 15 minutes, 8.42 seconds.
The Vulcans qualified three entries for the finals in the 60-meter dash. Senior
Kristopher Lytle (Columbia, Md./Atholton) placed second overall in the preliminaries with a time of 6.93 seconds, while freshman
Steven Graves III (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) finished in sixth place at 6.99 seconds, which was six-hundredths of a second faster than his seed time. Senior
Tyrese Canada (Richmond, Va./Henrico) placed eighth overall in the preliminaries by posting a time of 7.05 seconds.
Lytle also qualified for the finals in the 200-meter dash after crossing the finish line in third place with a time of 22.22 seconds.
In addition to Thrush, sophomore
Ian Zimmerman (Bedford, Pa./Northern Bedford County) scored in the 5,000 meters at the conference meet. He finished eighth overall with a time of 15:25.41. Freshman
Brendin Marks (Chantilly, Va./Chantilly) also scored in the long jump on Saturday, as he placed eighth with a distance of 6.76 meters (22-2.25) on his third attempt.
Senior
John Franklin, Jr. (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) placed fifth in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.41 seconds to qualify for the finals in the event. In the weight throw, fellow senior
Sam Rothstein (Sykesville, Md./Century) shattered his personal record with a heave of 15.22 meters (49-11.25) on his third attempt to finish ninth overall.
Munro also began competition in the heptathlon at the league championships on Saturday. With three events remaining, he sits in 11th place with 2,257 points with a top-five finish in the 60-meter hurdles.
The Vulcans sit fifth in the team standings after the opening day with 13.5 points. Shippensburg paces the standings through five events with 56 points, while Slippery Rock ranks second with 46 points and East Stroudsburg is third with 23.5 points.
Cal concludes the PSAC Championships tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 26, with events starting at 11:30 a.m.
