California climbs to No. 13 in latest poll

LILBURN, Ga. (Dec. 19) – The California (PA) women's basketball team climbed four positions to No. 13 in the latest Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Top 25 Coaches' Poll on Tuesday afternoon.

Note, the poll and records only reflect games played through Dec. 17.

The Vulcans previously sat at No. 17 in the national rankings in back-to-back weeks before overcoming a 16-point halftime deficit to earn a 72-68 win over previously undefeated and then-No. 15 Fairmont State last Tuesday. Cal tied its season high with 10 three-pointers, including eight in the second half, and collected 24 offensive rebounds against the Fighting Falcons.

The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) boasts a pair of top 10 in the poll for a consecutive week. Gannon (10-1) climbed three spots to No. 3 despite being idle, while West Chester (7-1) remained at No. 9 while also being idle. Following the loss to the Vulcans, Fairmont State (9-1) of the Mountain East Conference (MEC) dropped two spots to No. 17 after later posting a home victory on Saturday. Virginia State (9-1) of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) climbed one slot to No. 19 after extending its winning streak to nine games before suffering a loss on Saturday.

The top-five featured major changes this week following multiple losses by previously undefeated teams. Grand Valley State (8-1) claimed the No. 1 position for the first time this year with 16 first-place votes. Ashland (8-1) slipped to No. 2 following its first loss in nearly 650 days, snapping a 45-game winning streak. Following Gannon at No. 3, Catawba (N.C.) (7-1) and Texas Woman's (10-1) both jumped two spots to round out the top five. Former No. 3 Central Missouri (8-2) dropped 11 positions to No. 14 and former No. 4 Union (Tenn.) (10-1) dropped four slots to No. 8.

Cal returns to action tonight, Tuesday, Dec. 19, when it hosts Lock Haven in PSAC Crossover action at 5:30 p.m.
