Noah Bernarding both registered top-20 finishes on Saturday morning, as the California (PA) men's cross country team placed eighth at the NCAA Regional Championships.
The Vulcans totaled 281 points to rank eighth while competing in a field of 21 teams. Cal posted back-to-back top-10 finishes in the team standings at the event for the first time since 2013-15. Charleston (W.Va.) narrowly captured its fifth-straight regional title with 54 points after boasting the top-three individual runners. Davis & Elkins also finished with 54 points but finished second due to a tiebreaker, while Shippensburg ranked third in the team standings with 63 points on Saturday.
Thrush finished 11th overall after crossing the finish line in 30 minutes, 55.2 seconds. He recorded a consecutive top-15 finish at the event after he placed sixth overall in 2022. Thrush was positioned in 11th place at the 3.5-kilometer marker before dropping back to 22nd place over the next 1.3 kilometers. The 5-foot-10 sophomore then climbed to 15th overall at the 7.4-kilometer marker and used a split of 5:08.3 over 1.5 kilometers to move back to 11th place.
Bernarding finished in 17th place after posting a time of 31:15.1 over the 10-kilometer course at Lock Haven. He ranked as high as eighth overall at a pair of early markers before eventually sitting in 23rd place with 2.5 kilometers remaining. Bernarding used a kick of 2:39.4 over the final 1,100 kilometers to climb five places on the leader board. The Cochranton, Pennsylvania, native previously finished as high as 40th overall at the regional championships prior to Saturday.
Thrush and Bernarding both earned all-region status, as the honor is awarded to the top-25 finishers at the championships.
Senior
Mason Jobe finished with a time of 32:48.3 to rank 62nd overall, while sophomore
Kolby Kent crossed the finish line in 95th place with a time of 33:48.8. Freshman
Jordan Wiedman rounded out the team scorers with a time of 34:093.3 to finish 106th overall.
Charleston freshman George Couttie earned the individual crown by nearly seven seconds with a time of 30:10.5.
