WEST CHESTER, Pa. (April 5) – Led by four top-10 finishers, the California University of Pennsylvania women's golf team placed third at the Dr. Edwin B. Cottrell Invitational hosted by West Chester on Tuesday.
The Vulcans finished with a 139-over 707 (357-350) while playing at the Penn Oaks Golf Club. Cal U, which featured a modified lineup, was tied for first place in the team standings after the opening round with a 73-over 357. The host Golden Rams claimed the invitational title by one stroke with a 134-over 702 (359-343) and Millersville placed second with a 135-over 703 (357-346).
Junior
Kate Brown (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) led the team and tied for fifth overall with a 34-over 176 (89-87). She carded a top-10 finish for the first time while playing in her 13th career event.
Fellow junior
Halle Herrington (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) fired a 35-over 177 (85-92) to finish in seventh place on Tuesday. Freshman
Madelyn Myers (Smock, Pa./Uniontown) placed eighth overall with a 36-over 178 (89-89), while classmate
Keegan Selinsky (Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) shot a 37-over 179 (94-85) to tie for ninth place. Sophomore
Morgan Hughes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Northwest) finished 15th overall after carding a 41-over 183 (94-83).
Le Moyne (N.Y.) freshman Mia Avotins earned medalist honors by six strokes with an 18-over 160 (79-81) while playing in a field of nearly 50 golfers from nine teams.
The Vulcans return to action next week when they compete at the Gannon Spring Invitational on April 15-16 at the Whispering Woods Golf Club in Erie, Pennsylvania.
