LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (April 5) – After collecting three victories last week, California University of Pennsylvania freshman
Maria Del Mar Ojeda (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Americano De Cali) was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Athlete of the Week on Tuesday afternoon.
Ojeda registered a combined 3-1 record last week, as the Vulcans split a pair of matches against West Virginia Wesleyan and Clarion. She started the week by teaming with sophomore
Carmen Duran (Barcelona, Spain/Esteve Albert) for a 6-4 victory at first doubles on Thursday over Julia Pinto and Alanis Alvarez from West Virginia Wesleyan. On Saturday, Ojeda and Duran posted a 6-4 win against Alexis Strouse and Savannah Buttery at first doubles against Clarion. The 5-foot-3 freshman then tallied a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Buttery at second singles.
A native of Columbia, Ojeda leads the team with seven singles victories this season, including six at the second position. She also is tied for second on the team with five wins in doubles play while playing with three different partners.
Ojeda became the first player to receive the weekly award from the conference since the 2017 campaign.
The Vulcans return to action tomorrow, Wednesday, April 6, when they host Frostburg State for a non-conference match at Roadman Park, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
