McCaskey earns weekly pitching honor

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (April. 25) – Following an extra-inning complete-game shutout, California University of Pennsylvania senior Jacob McCaskey (Tarentum, Pa./Deer Lakes) was selected the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Pitcher of the Week on Monday afternoon.

McCaskey recorded the first complete-game shutout of his career in Game 1 of a PSAC West doubleheader sweep at Pitt-Johnstown on Friday afternoon. He tossed 8.0 scoreless innings (100 pitches) in a 1-0 extra-inning victory to improve to 5-0 this season. McCaskey scattered six hits and two walks while tallying nine strikeouts in the win. The senior right-hander forced the Mountain Cats to leave a runner in scoring position in each of the final three innings on Friday.

A product of Deer Lakes, McCaskey holds a 2.88 ERA with 46 strikeouts in a career-high 40.2 innings this season. He has yielded three runs or less in six of his seven starts this year and has recorded a 1.25 WHIP (walks and hits per inning pitched). As a two-way standout, McCaskey anchors the Vulcans in multiple offensive categories, including a .396 average, nine home runs, 40 RBI and 44 runs scored.

McCaskey received PSAC West Pitcher of the Week laurels for the first time in his career after previously being chosen PSAC West Athlete of the Week last month. He is the first player in the entire PSAC to receive both honors – Athlete of the Week and Pitcher of the Week – from the league in the same year since Cal U's Joe Yourgal accomplished the feat in the 2016 campaign.

Cal U returns to action on Friday, April 29, when it hosts Clarion for a PSAC West doubleheader at Wild Things Park, starting at 1 p.m.
