ERIE, Pa. (April 16) – In their final preparation for the league championships, the Vulcans placed sixth in the team standings over the weekend at the weather-shortened Gannon Spring Invitational.
The California University of Pennsylvania women's golf team posted a 62-over 350 in the opening round before the second round was canceled on Saturday due to weather conditions. The host Lady Knights captured the tournament title by 20 strokes after shooting a 22-over 310 on Friday. Wheeling finished second overall with a 42-over 330 and Le Moyne (N.Y.) placed third with a 49-over 337.
Senior
Rachel Wilson (Warren, Pa./Warren) led the team and tied for 13th overall with a 12-over 84. She played the back nine at four-over and tied for fourth overall in the field with 10 pars. Wilson was playing in only her second event during the spring season.
Freshman
Madelyn Myers (Smock, Pa./Uniontown) shot a 14-over 86 and tied for 21st place while at Whispering Woods Golf Club. Sophomore
Addi Mann (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) and freshman
Keegan Selinsky (Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) tied for 31st overall after carding an 18-over 90 in the opening round. Selinsky played the back nine at five-over following a birdie on the par-five 12th. Junior
Kate Brown (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) rounded out the team scorers with a 22-over 94 to tie for 43rd place.
As individuals, senior
Colby Roberts (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) and junior
Lexi Tofanelli (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley) tied for 25th overall with a 15-over 87. Roberts carded a birdie on the par-four fourth before playing the back nine at five-over, highlighted by an eagle on the par-five 12th. Tofanelli tied for second on the team with seven pars on Friday and registered a birdie on the par-five seventh.
Wheeling junior Emily Holzopfel claimed medalist honors by one stroke after firing a three-over 75 with a birdie and an eagle on the front nine.
The Vulcans return to the links next week when they compete at the PSAC Championships on April 22-24 at the Berkleigh Golf Club in Kutztown, Pennsylvania.
