PITTSBURG, Kan. (March 12) – California University of Pennsylvania senior
Divonne Franklin (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) broke the all-time league record in the 60-meter dash on Saturday evening while recording the program's highest finish in modern program history at the NCAA Championships.
Franklin placed fourth in the finals of the 60 meters with a staggering time of 7.427 seconds. She tied the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) all-time record in the preliminaries yesterday before shattering the mark by five-hundredths of a second. Franklin finished just 0.005 of a second behind third place and Mechaela Hyacinth of Azusa Pacific (Calif.), who won the national title in the 100-meter dash at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Minnesota State sophomore Makyla Jackson captured the victory in the 60 meters by six-hundredths of a second with a time of 7.34 seconds. She entered the NCAA Championships as the top seed in the country and also posted the fastest time in the preliminaries yesterday.
Franklin earned NCAA All-America honors for the third time in her career, including twice in the 60 meters. She finished ninth overall in the 100 meters last spring after being named an All-American in the 60 meters in 2020. Franklin posted the highest finish at the NCAA Championships in modern program history, as Julie Friend (2018 indoor, 2018 outdoor) and Alex Zanella (2015 indoor) both previously placed as high as fifth at the national event.
A native of Philadelphia, Franklin joins Friend and Summer Hill as the only three-time All-Americans in women's track & field history.
