PSAC Tournament Preview: Slippery Rock

CALIFORNIA (Feb. 28) – The California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team will host fifth-seeded Slippery Rock in the first round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament tonight, Monday, Feb. 28, at the Convocation Center starting at 6 p.m.

TICKETS
Cal U is selling tickets for the PSAC Tournament at the cost of $10 for adults, $5 for students and PSAC students with valid ID are admitted for free.

STORYLINES
• Last Time Out: The Vulcans concluded the regular season with an 87-83 loss at Gannon on Saturday.
• Cal U is looking to return to the quarterfinals of the PSAC Tournament for the second-straight playing season after reaching the 20-win mark for the first time since the 2007-08 campaign.
• The winner of the contest will travel to face top-seeded IUP in the quarterfinals of the PSAC Tournament on Wednesday, March 2, at 7 p.m.  

PSAC TOURNAMENT
• Cal U is the No. 4 seed in the PSAC Tournament and will host No. 5 seed Slippery Rock, while No. 6 Gannon will travel to face No. 3 Pitt-Johnstown in the first round.
• Top-seed IUP and No. 2 seed Mercyhurst both earned first-round byes and will return to action in the quarterfinals.
• The final four teams remaining will travel to the highest remaining seed in the PSAC West for the semifinals and the championship on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.  

SCOUTING THE VULCANS
• In his fourth season as head coach, Danny Sancomb enters with a 47-38 record with the program and a 35-30 mark in PSAC play while guiding the Vulcans to a pair of appearances in the PSAC Tournament.
• Sophomore Philip Alston leads the PSAC in scoring and rebounding at 21.1 points and 10.6 rebounds per game, as the first-year starter paces the league and ranks fourth in the country with 16 double-doubles
• Cal U is limiting opponents to a .398 field-goal percentage, which is second-best in the league, while it ranks third in the PSAC in scoring offense at 83.1 points per game.

SCOUTING THE ROCK
• In his fourth year as head coach, Ian Grandy enters the contest at 51-35 overall with a 40-25 mark in conference play while making two PSAC Tournament berths in his first two seasons.
• The Rock ranks second in the league and seventh in NCAA Division II with 13.96 offensive rebounds per game and second in the conference with 8.4 three-pointers made per game.
• Slippery Rock features four players in double-figures, led by graduate student Frankie Hughes with 15.7 points per game and senior transfer Tyler Frederick at 15.1 points and 9.6 rebounds per game.

SERIES
• The Rock holds a 20-9 advantage in the series dating back to the 2008 season, while the Vulcans have won three of the last four meetings.
• Sancomb holds a 3-3 record against Slippery Rock as head coach at Cal U with two of those victories coming on the road at Morrow Field House.
• The two programs will be meeting in the PSAC Tournament for the first time since they met in the first round during the 2012-13 campaign.
