STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (Feb. 11) – California University of Pennsylvania junior
Beyoncé Kelly (Edgewood, Md./Harford Technical) broke the indoor school record, reached the NCAA provisional standard and won the high jump on Friday at the Fastrack National Invitational at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
Kelly cleared 1.68 meters (5-6.00 feet) on her first attempt at the height in New York to capture the victory. She eclipsed the previous indoor school record of 5-5.25 feet set in 2008 by Joanna Nist, who also was an All-American for the Cal U volleyball team. Kelly reached the NCAA standard of 1.67 meters for the first time this season and now boasts the top height in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) this winter.
Senior
Divonne Franklin (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) also reached a NCAA provisional standard on Friday. She won the finals of the 60-meter dash by 0.15 seconds after posting a mark of 7.58 seconds. Franklin set a season-best time in the event during the preliminaries when she crossed the finish line first overall with a time of 7.57 seconds, which was just two-hundredths of a second shy of her school record. The Philadelphia native also placed third in the 200-meter dash behind a pair of NCAA Division I entries with a season-best mark of 24.96 seconds.
Junior
Malia Anderson (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) improved her PSAC-qualifying mark in the 800-meter run by over six seconds while in New York. She placed eighth overall in a field of over 100 entries after rounding the track in 2 minutes, 19.78 seconds.
Classmate
Kailee Bunyard (Columbia, Md./Atholton) reached the league standard in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.36 seconds on Friday. Fellow junior
Tatyana Young (Marion, Ohio/River Valley) posted a conference-qualifying time of 59.40 seconds in the 400-meter dash.
Freshman
Vanessa Damone (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) recorded a pair of season-best times in New York. She posted a mark of 8.10 seconds in the preliminaries of the 60 meters and crossed the finish line in 26.90 seconds in the 200 meters. Classmate
Jazzy Harper (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) set a season-best mark of 10.56 meters (34.7.75 feet) in the triple jump on Friday.
The Vulcans return to action on Feb. 19 when they compete at multiple events in Ohio, as members of the team will compete at both the Kent State Tune Up and Mount Union Raider Tune-Up.
