YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (Dec. 2) – The California (PA) men's track & field team reached 10 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying standards on Friday while opening the indoor season at the Youngstown State Icebreaker.
Junior
Noah Bernarding (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) and sophomore
Ian Zimmerman (Bedford, Pa./Northern Bedford County) both qualified for the league championships in the 1-mile run. Bernarding captured the victory in the event by eight-hundredths of a second with a time of 4 minutes, 17.02 seconds, while Zimmerman crossed the finish line in fifth place with a time of 4:21.36.
Freshman Brendin Marks reached a pair of conference standards while making his college debut in Ohio. He placed eighth in the triple jump with a distance of 13.72 meters (45-0.25 feet) on his third attempt. Marks also finished 10th overall with a mark of 6.84 meters (22-5.25 feet) in the long jump.
Sophomore
Logan Pfister (Fishertown, Pa./Chestnut Ridge) placed fifth in the high jump and qualified for the PSAC Championships on Friday. He cleared 2.01 meters (6-7.0 feet) on his third attempt at the height. Pfister, who played all 11 games this year on the Cal football team, captured the indoor league title in the event last winter.
In the pole vault, junior
Colin Finkbiner (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) set a personal record and reached the league standard with a height of 4.20 meters (13-9.25 feet) to finish in fourth place.
Senior
John Franklin, Jr. (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) and freshman Donovan Adams both qualified for the PSAC Championships in the 60-meter hurdles while in Ohio. Franklin matched his personal best with a time of 8.63 seconds, while Adams posted a time of 8.88 seconds in his college debut.
In the 60-meter dash, senior
Kristopher Lytle (Columbia, Md./Atholton) reached the league standard with a time of 7.10 seconds at the season-opening event. Freshman
Bill Folmer (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) qualified for the league meet in the 800-meter run after crossing the finish line in 1:57.83 on Friday.
The Vulcans are now idle for over a month before opening the 2023 calendar year at the SPIRE Midwest Open on Jan. 21 in Geneva, Ohio.
