Women's Golf wins season-opening home event

BELLE VERNON, Pa. (Sept. 6) – Behind four top-10 finishers, the California University of Pennsylvania women's golf team won the Vulcan Invitational by seven strokes on Monday after shooting an 86-over 658 (326-332) at Cedarbrook Golf Course.

The Vulcans shot a 48-over 332 in the second round after firing the lowest score of the tournament in the opening round at 38-over 326. Charleston (W.Va.) finished in second place with a 65-over 665 (335-330), while Wheeling climbed to third place with a 62-over 686 (357-329). The event featured 10 teams, including five from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), and was played on both the Red and Gold Courses at Cedarbrook.

Sophomore Addi Mann (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) climbed five spots on the individual leader board in the second round and finished third overall with a 20-over 163 (83- 80). She ranked third overall in the field with 19 pars, including 11 in the final round. Mann has now recorded a pair of top-five individual finishes in her career.

Freshman Keegan Selinsky (Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) tied for fourth place at 22-over 165 (77-88) in her college debut. She played the last dozen holes of the tournament at three-over after collecting back-to-back birdies on the back nine.

Seniors Rachel Wilson (Warren, Pa./Warren) and Jaclyn Smith (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) both tied for ninth overall at 25-over 168. Wilson shot a nine-over 80 in the final round to vault 12 places on the leader board and closed the tournament with two birdies and 14 pars. Smith recorded a 15-over 86 on Monday after opening the round with a birdie on the par-four 1st.

Freshman Madelyn Myers (Smock, Pa./Uniontown) finished in 15th place with a 27-over 170 (84-86). She carded back-to-back birdies at the turn on Monday and closed play with 13 pars.

As an individual, junior Halle Herrington (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) carded a career-low score of 11-over 82 in the final round on Monday. She vaulted a dozen places on the leader board to a tie for 18th overall at 29-over 172 (90-82). Senior Colby Roberts (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) also set a career-best round on Monday, firing an 11-over 82 while on the Red Course. She registered a pair of birdies in the round and made the turn at six-over.

Charleston (W.Va.) freshman Victoria Witouski captured the individual title by one stroke with a five over 158 (82-76) after carding one birdie and a total 21 pars at the event.

The Vulcans return to action at the ODU Champions of Women's Golf Classic hosted by Ohio Dominican in Columbus, Ohio, on Sept. 18-19 at the Champions Golf Course.
