Classic: 2009 NCAA Atlantic Region Championship

SPOTLIGHT

Gannon (26-5) v. #6 Cal U (29-4) - March 16, 2009 – Hamer Hall
The Vulcans earned the top seed for the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the regional final following a pair of victories by a combined 57 points. Junior guard Brooque Williams entered the tournament averaging a double-double with 22.1 points and 10.8 rebounds per game, both of which ranked among the top 15 in the country. Junior Crystal Andrews and Williams were both featured among the top 10 in the country in steals and combined for 7.5 steals per game. In its first season as members of the PSAC, Gannon received the third seed in the tournament and advanced with a 69-65 overtime win over IUP in the regional semifinals after the Crimson Hawks tied the game at the end of regulation. The Lady Knights featured a balanced scoring offense with four players averaging over 11 points per game and ranked sixth in the country in field-goal percentage.

The Vulcans posted a 64-40 victory to earn their fourth NCAA regional title in seven years. Cal U raced out to a 28-4 lead over the opening 11 minutes of the game before leading by as many as 27 points in the first half. The Lady Knights were eventually able to work the deficit down to 15 points in the second half, while the Vulcans scored the last nine points of the game. Williams led all players with 28 points, including 17 points in the second half, and added 10 rebounds and four steals. She was named Atlantic Regional Tournament MVP after averaging 22.3 points, 7.7 rebounds and 3.7 steals in three games. Sophomore Kayla Smith posted nine points and 11 rebounds, while senior Lindsay Johnson totaled 10 points and eight rebounds. The Vulcans later suffered an 88-73 loss in the Elite Eight to Franklin Pierce (N.H.), which eventually advanced to the 2009 NCAA National Championship.
