SPOTLIGHT

#11 Pace v. #1 Cal U (NCAA East Region Semifinal) – 1992 – Hamer Hall
The Vulcans entered the NCAA Tournament as the No. 1 team in the country behind a 26-game winning streak. Cal U captured its first PSAC Championship since 1988 and held a perfect 17-0 record at Hamer Hall. Pace (23-5) featured the top-ranked scoring defense in the country and was making the program's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

 


Cal U 69, Pace 66 (overtime)
The Vulcans trailed 32-26 at halftime and eventually forced overtime by making a free-throw with eight seconds remaining in regulation. Cal U scored six-straight points, including back-to-back fastbreak baskets by James Kirkland, to take a 66-60 lead with 2:05 left in overtime. In the final 30 seconds, the Vulcans sealed the victory with three free-throws. Kenny Toomer led all players with 28 points and added seven rebounds, while Kirkland finished with 19 points and seven rebounds. Cal U limited Pace's all-time leading scorer Bret Brisbane to eight points before he fouled out of the contest.


#4 Philadelphia Textiles [now Jefferson] v. #1 Cal U (NCAA East Region Championship) – 1992 – Hamer Hall
Philadelphia Textiles was making its third appearance in the NCAA Tournament in four years after winning the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) Championship. The program featured a two-time NABC All-American in Randy Stover and earned an 83-70 win in the regional semifinals over Saint Rose.

 



Cal U 90, Philadelphia Textiles 79
Cal U held a 35-32 lead at the break before eventually capturing the first regional championship in program history. Ray Gutierrez led four players in double-digits with 26 points behind six three-pointers. Toomer tallied 21 points and six rebounds, while Chris Williams finished with 17 points and Kirkland added 10 points and seven rebounds. Stover scored 23 points in the loss to finish his career with 2,369 points. Textiles head coach Herb Magee was eventually inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and continues to serve as coach of the program - 54th season in the role.


EXTRA: Highlight tape from the historic 1991-92 season, including video clips courtesy WTAE, WPXI and ESPN. The Vulcans set a school record for wins by finishing the year with a 31-2 overall record. Cal U advanced to the national semifinals for the first time in program history following an 84-73 win over South Dakota State in the Elite Eight.
