Box Score

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 4) – Senior Haley Henderson (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton) recorded two goals and classmate Erin Hogan (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) collected a pair of assists on Thursday afternoon, as the No. 12 Vulcans opened the season with a 5-2 victory at Shippensburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play.

The California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team claimed a win in its season-opener for the sixth time in the last seven years. The game marked the debut of Glenn Francis as head coach for the Vulcans after he served as the assistant coach in 2013. Cal U and Shippensburg played to a 0-0 double-overtime tie in the semifinals of last year's PSAC Tournament.

With her two assists, Hogan is now only two assists shy of tying the all-time PSAC record. Henderson and fellow senior Chelsea Crockett (Gilmanton, N.H./Gilford), who tallied a goal on Thursday, moved into a tie for eighth place in school history with 23 career goals. Crockett is also now tied for ninth all-time in school history with 61 points.

Cal U opened the scoring in the fifth minute when junior Kara Novotny (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) scored an unassisted goal from about 35 yards out.  The Vulcans stretched their lead to 2-0 just over 10 minutes later when junior Janelle McCann (Burlington, Vt./Tilton School) tallied a goal off an assist from junior Marissa Neifert (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff).

Following halftime, Henderson and Hogan connected for a pair of goals in a six-minute span. Henderson collected her first goal of the season in the 55th minute before the duo again teamed together at the 61:34-mark. Less than three minutes later, Crockett posted an unassisted goal to stretch the lead to 5-0.

The Raiders avoided the shutout by scoring a pair of goals in the final 15 minutes of the game, including one off a corner kick in the 84th minute.

Sophomore goalkeeper Meghan Jayes (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) earned the victory after posting one save in 73-plus minutes of action. Shippensburg goalkeeper Victoria Bremer finished with four saves in the losing effort.

The Vulcans finished the game with a 13-6 shot advantage after limiting the Raiders to one shot in the first half. Both teams posted three corner kicks in the season-opener.

Cal U continues PSAC play on Saturday, Sept. 6, when it hosts Millersville at 5 p.m.
