Photo GalleryCALIFORNIA (Sept. 10) – In a game featuring two of the league's preseason favorites, the No. 6 Vulcans suffered a 1-0 loss to rival Slippery Rock in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Wednesday night at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team falls to 2-1-1 overall behind a 2-1 mark in league play. Meanwhile, Slippery Rock improves to 1-1-1 this season with all three games against conference opponents. The Vulcans and Rock have combined to win the last three PSAC Tournaments and have met a combined five times in the post-season since the 2010 campaign.
The Rock scored the game-winning goal at the 87:18-mark when sophomore Dara Demich beat goalkeeper
Meghan Jayes (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) on a header to the top right corner off a corner kick. Cal U then attempted to even the score with three shot attempts in the final two-plus minutes with just one shot being placed on goal.
Jayes tied her career high with six saves in the losing effort, while Slippery Rock goalkeeper Annabelle Hegeman recorded the shutout after making one save.
Slippery Rock finished the game with an 11-8 advantage in shots after the teams combined for only four shots in the first half. Both teams tallied six corner kicks with The Rock taking all six of their corners in the second half.
The Vulcans are idle for almost a week before returning to action on Tuesday, Sept. 16, when they travel to IUP at 5 p.m.
