Box ScoreINDIANA, Pa. (April 8) – In a rematch of last year's conference title match and a match featuring the top teams in the Atlantic Region, the No. 12 Vulcans recorded an 8-1 win at No. 44 IUP on Tuesday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.
With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team improves to 9-2 overall and 5-0 in league play. The Vulcans extended their winning streak to seven matches and earned at least a share of the divisional title entering the final weekend of the regular season. Meanwhile, the Crimson Hawks drop to 12-7 this season behind a 4-1 mark in conference action.
The Vulcans have swept doubles play in all five league matches this season, dropping a combined eight games on Tuesday. At the first position, the No. 11 tandem of senior
Lucie Sipkova (Pardubice, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Pardubice Mozartova) and junior
Lucie Rey (Geneva, Switzerland/Colombieres) collected an 8-2 victory over Tanya Timko and Erika Schnaas. Junior
Ramona Czakon (Trier, Germany/Tampereen Lyseon Lukio) and freshman
Mariela Sarinana (Mexico City, Mexico/Miraflores) extended their winning streak to seven matches after tallying an 8-2 win at second doubles against Alanna McFail and Sophie Butland. Freshmen
Kiefer Shaw (Westmount, Quebec/Centennial) and
Veronika Mikulis (Otterburn Park, Quebec/Heritage Regional) earned an 8-4 victory Ranvita Mahto and Rachel Wood at the third slot on Tuesday.
Cal U sealed the victory by winning at least five matches in singles play for the seventh-consecutive match. In a match featuring two of the top-ranked players in the region, Timko outlasted No. 5 Sipkova at the first position for a 1-6, 6-3, 10-8 victory. Czakon tallied her 15th victory of the year via walkover at the second slot and Rey posted a 6-1, 6-1 win at third singles against Schnaas.
Shaw also collected her 15th win of the year on Tuesday after downing Mahto at the fourth position by a 6-3, 6-3 count. Mikulis blanked Wood by a 6-0, 6-0 margin at fifth singles and Sarinana extended her winning streak to nine matches with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the sixth slot over McFail.
The Vulcans close out divisional play on Thursday, April 10, when they host Slippery Rock on Senior Day at Roadman Park with the match set for 3:30 p.m.
