Tennis blanks No. 46 Grand Valley State, 9-0

CALIFORNIA (April 12) – The No. 12 California University of Pennsylvania tennis team extended its winning streak to nine matches on Saturday morning at Roadman Park with a 9-0 win over No. 46 Grand Valley State, the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament runner-up last season.

With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 11-2 this season behind a 5-0 mark in home matches. Meanwhile, the Lakers fall to 19-6 this year after entering play on a four-game winning streak and ranked fourth in the Midwest region.

Cal U swept doubles play for the fourth-straight match on Sunday. At first singles, the No. 11 tandem of senior Lucie Sipkova (Pardubice, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Pardubice Mozartova) and junior Lucie Rey (Geneva, Switzerland/Colombieres) posted an 8-5 victory over the regionally-ranked duo of Carola Oma and Lexi Rice. Junior Ramona Czakon (Trier, Germany/Tampereen Lyseon Lukio) and freshman Mariela Sarinana (Mexico City, Mexico/Miraflores) extended their winning streak to nine matches with an 8-2 win at the second position over Leah Dancz and Kali Phillips. Junior Jesse Burrell (Perth, Australia/Presbyterian Ladies' College) and freshman Kiefer Shaw (Westmount, Quebec/Centennial) completed the doubles sweep by earning an 8-6 victory against Kristina Lucas and Kelly Trapp at the third slot.

The Vulcans completed the match victory against the Lakes behind a pair of three-set wins. Sipkova blanked Rice, who is the 12th-ranked player in the Midwest region, at the first position by a 6-0, 6-0 count for her team-best 24th victory of the season. Czakon earned a 6-2, 6-0 win over Phillips at second singles and Rey posted a 7-5, 6-1 victory at the third slot against Dancz.

Shaw registered a 6-1, 6-1 win over Niki Shipman at the fourth position and freshman Veronika Mikulis (Otterburn Park, Quebec/Heritage Regional) outlasted Oma at the fifth slot for a 6-4, 2-6, 10-4 victory. Sarinana rebounded from an opening-set loss to extend her team-best winning streak to 10 matches with a 3-6, 6-2, 10-3 victory over Morgan Patterson.

Cal U returns to action on Thursday, April 17, when it plays in the semifinals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament in West Chester, Pa., at 3 p.m. The Vulcans received a first-round bye in the league tournament and will face the winner of Kutztown-West Chester, who play on Monday, April 14.
