Women's Basketball tops Edinboro, 80-55

EDINBORO, Pa. (Feb. 8) – Freshman Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) led four players in double-figures, as the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team dealt Edinboro its first loss in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play with an 80-55 win Saturday night at the McComb Field House.
 
The win improves the Vulcans to 14-7 overall and 8-4 in conference play and snaps a four-game losing streak to Edinboro at the McComb Field House. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots fall to 10-1 in the PSAC West action and 16-5 overall. Edinboro is currently receiving the most votes of any unranked team in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Top 25 poll.
 
Glenn led the way with a game-high 22 points and added seven rebounds and three assists to her line after being held scoreless in the Vulcans last matchup against the Fighting Scots.
 
Junior Irina Kukolj (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) finished with 16 points, while classmates Emma Mahady (Albury, Australia/Xavier) and Kaitlynn Fratz (Accident, Md./Northern Garrett) each posted 12 points. Mahady added seven rebounds to her final line, junior Shanice Clark (Toronto, Ontario/Cedarbrae C.I) chipped in nine points and seven rebounds, while senior Ashley Hines (Newark, N.J./Trenton Central) finished with a game-high eight rebounds and seven points in the win.
 
Cal U and Edinboro each traded baskets through the first 10 minutes with neither team gaining an advantage greater than three points. The Vulcans opened up the game with a 22-7 run over an eight-minute stretch to take a 33-18 lead with 2:20 left in the first half. The Fighting Scots responded with five-unanswered points in the next minute, but Cal U out-scored Edinboro 6-2 over the final minute to take a 39-25 lead into the break. The Vulcans forced 15 first-half turnovers by the Fighting Scots and took a 14-point lead into halftime despite shooting 0-for-7 from three-point range.
 
The Vulcans extended their lead to 47-27 two minutes into the second half behind an 8-2 run that included three-pointers from Glenn and Kukolj. Although the Fighting Scots were able to end the run, the Vulcans pushed their lead to 55-34 with 14:07 remaining in the game after six-unanswered points. Edinboro pulled to within 18 points, 59-41, with 10:07 left in regulation, but a 10-1 run, headlined by a traditional three-point play from Clark, pushed the Vulcan lead to 69-42 with 6:22 remaining in the contest. Cal U drained seven-of-eight from the free-throw line to close out its first win at McComb Field House since 2010.
 
The Vulcans won by 25 points despite shooting 16.7 percent (2-of-12) from beyond the arc. Cal U held a 44-30 rebounding advantage in the contest, including 24 offensive rebounds, and forced the Fighting Scots into 24 turnovers. The Vulcans were successful at the charity stripe, making 26-of-30 attempts (86.7 percent) at the free-throw line.
 
Edinboro was led by Laurel Lindsay, who finished with 20 points, seven rebounds and four assists. No other player for the Fighting Scots scored in double-figures.
 
Cal U is back in action this Wednesday, Feb. 12, when they host PSAC West rival IUP. The opening tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
