KUTZTOWN, Pa. (Jan. 4) – Behind nearly 20 points from both senior forwards
Elena Antonenko (Moscow, Russia/State University of Physical Education) and
Ashley Hines (Newark, N.J./Trenton Central), the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team earned a 63-52 victory at Kutztown on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action.
With the win, the Vulcans improve to 7-5 this season and extend their winning streak to five games. Cal U was winless through the opening four games of the year before winning seven of its last eight games. Meanwhile, the Golden Bears fall to 5-7 overall and have now lost four-consecutive games.
Hines set a season high and led all players with 19 points while playing 30 minutes off the bench. She shot eight-of-nine attempts from the floor and made three-of-four attempts from the free-throw line. Hines also led the team with eight rebounds (five offensive) and added three steals against the Golden Bears.
Antonenko also scored a season high on Saturday, finishing with 18 points on six-of-eight shooting. The 6-foot-3 senior made three-of-five from beyond the arc and tallied seven rebounds. Freshman guard
Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) collected seven points, six rebounds and five assists in the victory, while junior guard
Kaitlynn Fratz (Accident, Md./Northern Garrett) posted seven points, four rebounds and five steals on Saturday.
The Golden Bears scored the opening two baskets of the game before the Vulcans rallied off a 13-7 run over nearly eight minutes to take a 13-11 lead with 10:18 left in the first half. The teams, which combined for eight lead changes in the first half, continued to trade baskets before Kutztown took a 26-24 lead at the break.
Both teams recorded shot runs to start the second half and traded baskets until midway through the second half. With the score tied at 36-36, Cal U went on an 11-6 run behind nine combined points by Antonenko and Hines and took a 47-42 lead with 9:06 left to play. The Golden Bears countered with a 6-2 rally before the Vulcans sealed the game with a 13-3 run over six-plus minutes to take a 62-51 lead with 30 seconds remaining.
The Vulcans shot over 60 percent in the second half before finishing the game with a .386 field-goal percentage (22-of-57). Cal U made just 18.8 percent (3-of-16) from beyond the arc and shot 61.5 percent (16-of-26) from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, Kutztown shot at a 41.5 clip (22-of-53) from the floor and 60.0 percent (6-of-10) from the charity stripe. Cal U out-rebounded Kutztown by a 39-34 margin and both teams scored 30 points from inside the paint.
Junior forward Advia Campbell led the Golden Bears with 14 points and four blocks in the losing effort. Freshman Kara Funk finished with 12 points and junior Alyssa Bonenberger collected nine points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Cal U finishes PSAC Crossover play on Wednesday, Jan. 8, when it hosts Mansfield at 5:30 p.m.
