Trio leads Cal U past Shippensburg, 95-90

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (Jan. 3) – Freshman Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) scored a career-high 28 points and juniors Kaitlynn Fratz (Accident, Md./Northern Garrett) and Emma Mahady (Albury, Australia/Xavier) both scored at least 20 points on Friday afternoon, as the Vulcans collected a 95-90 win at Shippensburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play.

With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 6-5 overall behind a four-game winning streak. The Vulcans have won six of their last seven games after being winless through the opening four games of the year. Meanwhile, Shippensburg falls to 8-3 this season and suffered its first home loss since Nov. 15..

Glenn led the team with 28 points after shooting 9-of-16 from the floor, including three-of-three from beyond the arc, and seven-of-eight from the free-throw line. She also totaled five rebounds, three assists and two steals while playing all 40 minutes on Friday. Glenn, who scored 20 points in the second half, finished with the most points in a game since February 2011 and recorded the most points by a freshman since December 2007.

Fratz tallied 27 points and played all 40 minutes while making her fourth start of the year. She made 11-of-19 attempts from the floor, including a pair of three-pointers, and went three-of-six from the charity stripe. Fratz also added three assists and three steals against the Raiders.

Mahady finished with her third 20-point game of the year, scoring 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field and five-of-nine from the free-throw line. The junior Australian also collected five rebounds and three steals in the victory. Sophomore forward Nia-Tayler Clark (Bowie, Md./Bowie) led the team with eight rebounds (five offensive) in just nine minutes off the bench.

The teams combined for 16 lead changes and six tie scores in the second half after Cal U took a 45-40 lead into the break. The Raiders scored the opening eight points after halftime to take a 48-45 lead before the Vulcans reclaimed the lead at 55-54 on a lay-up by Fratz with 14:12 remaining. After five-straight points by Shippensburg, Cal U responded with eight-unanswered points to take a 63-59 lead with 11:18 left to play.

The Raiders countered with a 13-6 run over nearly four minutes to take a 72-69 lead with 7:37 remaining. Cal U then mounted an 18-8 run with all 18 points scored by the trio of Fratz, Glenn and Mahady to take an 87-80 lead with 2:12 left to play. The Vulcans sealed the victory by making seven-of-eight free-throws down the stretch, including seven by Glenn.

The Vulcans finished the game shooting 47.3 percent (35-of-74) from the field and made seven three-pointers for third-straight game. In comparison, Shippensburg made 46.2 percent (30-of-65) from the floor and held a sizeable advantage from the charity stripe, shooting 76.5 percent (26-of-34). The Raiders out-rebounded the Vulcans by a 45-42 edge and scored 24 second-chance points, while Cal U finished with 19 points off turnovers. 

Sophomore Stephanie Knauer led the Raiders with a career high of 31 points and tallied her 15th career double-double with a game-high 16 rebounds. Senior guard Sarah Strybuc added 19 points in the loss.

Cal U continues its weekend road trip tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 4, when it travels to face Kutztown at 1 p.m.
