Murphy's double-double lifts Vulcans, 62-59

CALIFORNIA (Jan. 29) – Led by a double-double from junior forward Alonzo Murphy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Imani Christian), the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team earned a 62-59 win over Gannon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action Wednesday night at the Convocation Center.
 
The win improves the Vulcans to 9-10 overall and 4-5 in PSAC West play. The Golden Knights fall to 11-8 overall and 6-3 in conference play.
 
Murphy led the way for the Vulcans with his second career double-double. The Pittsburgh native finished with 12 points, 12 rebounds, three blocks and three assists. Sophomore Jake Jacubec (Struthers, Ohio/Struthers) and junior Arman Marks (Louisville, Ky./Eastern) each chipped in with 10 points to pace Murphy. Eight of Marks' points came in the final four minutes of the game.
 
Both teams traded baskets through the opening several minutes with the Vulcans tying the game at 12-12 on a three-pointer by freshman Drew Cook (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver Falls) with 13:16 left in the first half. Cal U earned its first lead since the opening minute, 24-23, on a jumper from Jacubec with 5:18 left in the opening half, but the two teams exchanged the lead five times over the final five minutes with a Gannon basket sending the game into the half tied at 32-32.
 
The Vulcans scored the opening points of the second half, but Gannon went on a 10-2 run to take a 42-36 lead with 13:51 left in regulation. Cal U answered with a 13-5 run, with 10 of the 13 points scored by Murphy, to take a 49-47 lead with 7:49 remaining in the contest. Gannon evened up the game three times over the next four minutes before Marks drained a three-pointer and a jumper to give the Vulcans a five-point lead, 58-53, with 2:40 left in the game. Gannon responded with a three-pointer to pull within two, 58-56, with 1:31 remaining in regulation, but Marks answered from long range to put the Vulcans back up by five with 57 seconds remaining in the contest.
 
After a free-throw by Jacubec extended the lead to four, Gannon answered with a three-pointer to cut the Cal U lead to 62-59 with 20 seconds remaining to play. The Vulcans missed the front-end of a one-and-one attempt, allowing the Golden Knights a chance to tie. However, Gannon missed its last two three-point attempts in the final 15 seconds to seal the win for the Vulcans.
 
Neither team led by more than six points in a game that saw 14 tie scores and eight lead changes. Gannon did not possess the lead in the final 10 minutes of the game.
 
The Vulcans are back in action Saturday, Feb. 1, for a PSAC West tilt at Slippery Rock. The opening-tip is set for 3 p.m.
