Vulcans post win at IUP, 69-63

INDIANA, Pa. (Jan. 18) – Freshman Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) scored a game-high 24 points and collected a career-high eight assists on Saturday evening, as the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team posted a 69-63 victory over IUP at the Kovalchick Complex and Athletic Center in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 10-6 overall and 4-3 in divisional play. Cal U has won eight of its last nine games and recorded its first victory in three trips to the KCAC. Meanwhile, IUP falls to 2-4 in league action and 11-5 overall after suffering its fourth-consecutive loss.

Glenn finished with 24 points (16 second half) on 9-of-15 shooting from the floor and six-of-eight from the free-throw line. She also led the team with six rebounds and eight assists while playing 37 minutes. Glenn scored in double-digits for the first time since Jan. 3 when she established a career high with 28 points.

Junior guard Kaitlynn Fratz (Accident, Md./Northern Garrett) added 11 points and tied her season high with five steals. Classmates Emma Mahady (Albury, Australia/Xavier) and Irina Kukolj (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) each finished with 10 points in the victory.

After a pair of early IUP three-pointers, Cal U responded with nine-unanswered points to take an 11-6 lead with 14:02 left in the first half. The Crimson Hawks countered with a 7-1 rally over the next three-plus minutes to take a 13-12 lead with 11:01 left before the break. Cal U then reclaimed the lead with an impressive 11-1 run during which it made all five field-goal attempts and later led by as many as 11 points, 29-18, with 4:20 remaining in the first half. The Crimson Hawks held the Vulcans scoreless on their final 10 possessions (six turnovers) until halftime, trimming the deficit to 29-25 at the break.

IUP carried the momentum into the initial minutes of the second half, scoring the opening nine points to take a 34-29 lead with 18:10 left to play. The Vulcans responded with a 7-2 run over the next three-plus minutes to tie the score at 36-36 with 14:45 remaining. Glenn scored 13-straight points for the Vulcans, who would later mount an 11-2 run to take a 54-49 lead with 8:49 left to play. IUP would eventually counter with a 10-2 run to tie the score at 61-61 before a three-pointer by Mahady with 3:02 remaining. The Crimson Hawks trimmed the deficit to 64-63 with a basket at the 1:24-mark before Glenn made a clutch jumper in the paint around several defenders with 23.8 seconds left. IUP missed a three-pointer and committed a turnover on its final two possessions, while Cal U made four free-throws in the last 30 seconds to seal the win.

Cal U shot over 50 percent in the second half and finished the game making 46.6 percent (27-of-58) from the field. The Vulcans also shot at a 70.6 clip (12-of-17) from the free-throw line, including 10-of-13 in the second half. Meanwhile, IUP made 49.1 percent (26-of-53) from the floor and 57.1 percent (4-of-7) from the charity stripe. The Crimson Hawks held a 33-28 rebounding advantage, while the Vulcans scored 26 points off turnovers.

Junior Ashley Stoner led the Crimson Hawks with 15 points and added six rebounds. Fellow junior Leslie Stapleton added 13 points and a game-high seven rebounds off the bench, while classmate Lindsay Stamp was limited to five points due to injury after entering the game averaging nearly 20 points per game.

The Vulcans are idle for a week before returning to action on Saturday, Jan. 25, when they host league-newcomer Seton Hill on Alumni Day at 3:30 p.m.
