CALIFORNIA (Jan. 15) – Ten players registered points as the Vulcans earned a 77-66 win over Clarion in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action Wednesday night at the Convocation Center.
The win improves the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team to 9-6 overall and 3-3 in PSAC West play. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles fall to 1-4 in conference play and 7-8 overall.
A total of 10 Vulcans recorded points in the win with several players scoring six or more. Senior
Ashley Hines (Newark, N.J./Trenton Central) and junior
Kaitlynn Fratz (Accident, Md./Northern Garrett) each had 14 points to lead Cal U and Hines added five rebounds in the win. Senior
Elena Antonenko (Moscow, Russia/State University of Physical Education) chipped in with 10 points, four rebounds and three blocks, while junior
Emma Mahady (Albury, Australia/Xavier) and freshman
Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va/Bridgeport) each added nine points.
Cal U converted on nine of its first 13 shots in the game, including three-of-five from beyond the arc, to take a 21-9 lead with 9:49 remaining in the first half. Clarion answered with a 12-6 run over the next three minutes to pull within seven, 28-21, with 7:41 left in the half, but the Vulcans took control with a 21-6 run to close out the frame with a 49-27 lead. Cal U converted 55.9 percent of its attempts (19-of-34), including 6-of-12 from three-point range in the first half.
Each team matched buckets in the first four minutes of the second half, but the Golden Eagles trimmed the Vulcan lead with a 12-3 run to pull within 63-57 with 10:16 remaining in the game. Cal U halted the run momentarily with a pair of baskets by Hines, but Clarion went on a 12-5 run to pull within 72-62 with 4:53 left in the contest. However, the Vulcans limited the Golden Eagles to four points over the final four minutes of the game to close out the victory.
The Vulcans out-rebounded Clarion 38-28 and hauled in 17 offensive rebounds in the victory. After its hot shooting in the first half, Cal U was only 37.5 percent (12-of-32) and converted just 3-of-14 from long distance in the second half.
Junior Hannah Heeter led the Clarion attack with a double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds while playing 39 minutes.
Cal U is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 18, when it travels to PSAC West rival IUP. The opening tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
