SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (April 9) – The No. 16 Vulcans claimed the outright Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West title for the ninth-consecutive season with an 8-1 win at Slippery Rock on Tuesday afternoon.
With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team improves to 10-9 overall. The Vulcans finish divisional play this year with a 5-0 mark and haven't lost a match against a PSAC opponent since the 2005-06 season. Meanwhile, Slippery Rock falls to 9-8 this year and 1-3 in league action.
The Vulcans took an early 3-0 lead by winning all three doubles matches, losing only a combined five points. At the first position, the No. 13 tandem of junior
Lucie Sipkova (Pardubice, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Pardubice Mozartova) and sophomore
Lucie Rey (Geneva, Switzerland/Colombieres) blanked Sarah Joumond and Kasey Love by an 8-0 count. Freshman
Alexandra Borgenhoff (Alingsas, Sweden/Katrinelund) and sophomore
Ramona Czakon (Trier, Germany/Tampereen Lyseon Lukio) collected an 8-3 victory at second doubles against Lauren Coggins and Janelle Krantz. Senior
Jade Pondicas (Johannesburg, South Africa/British International Distance) and freshman
Maxime Colen (Breda, Netherlands/Newman) tallied an 8-2 win over Samantha Bruggeman and Courtney Gallagher at the third slot.
Cal U sealed the match victory and the outright divisional title by earning five wins in singles play – all in straight sets. The reigning PSAC West Athlete of the Week, Sipkova posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory at first singles against Joumond. Czakon earned her fifth-straight win after blanking Love at the second position by a 6-0, 6-0 margin, while Borgenhoff recorded a 6-2, 6-3 victory at the third slot over Elisabeth Yetiskul. Rey finished with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Krantz at fourth singles and Pondicas collected a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the fifth position against Coggins. The Rock earned their lone victory of the match at the sixth slot when Colen retired against Bruggeman.
The Vulcans return to action on Friday, April 12, when they travel to face Duquesne at the Alpha Tennis Club in Harmar, Pa., at 2:30 p.m. The match marks the 10th time Cal U will face an NCAA Division I opponent in dual play this season.
