CALIFORNIA (April 14) – In a match featuring two of the top three teams in the region, the No. 16 Vulcans closed the regular season with a 9-0 Senior Day win against No. 47 West Virginia State at Roadman Park on Sunday afternoon.
With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team improves to 12-9 this season after winning six of its last seven matches. The Vulcans have earned a first-round bye in this week's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament and will play in the semifinals on Friday, April 19, at Indiana, Pa. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets fall to 16-8 overall after winning the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) Championship in the fall season.
The Vulcans swept the three doubles matches, losing only a combined three games on Sunday. The No. 13 duo of sophomore
Lucie Rey (Geneva, Switzerland/Colombieres) and junior
Lucie Sipkova (Pardubice, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Pardubice Mozartova) blanked Brittany Franco and Andreea Slusarciuc at the first position by an 8-0 count. At second doubles, the No. 21 tandem of freshman
Alexandra Borgenhoff (Alingsas, Sweden/Katrinelund) and sophomore
Ramona Czakon (Trier, Germany/Tampereen Lyseon Lukio) collected an 8-1 victory against Cora Berna and Charlotte Sandy. Freshman
Maxime Colen (Breda, Netherlands/Newman) and senior
Jade Pondicas (Johannesburg, South Africa/British International Distance) won their third-straight match, downing Jordan Kerns and Diana Cotoros by an 8-2 margin at the third slot.
Cal U completed the match sweep by winning all six singles matches in straight sets. At the first position, No. 36 Sipkova earned a 6-0, 6-3 win against regionally-ranked Franco. Czakon extended her winning streak to seven matches, downing regionally-ranked Slusarciuc at the second slot by a 6-4, 6-0 margin. Borgenhoff collected a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Berna at third singles, while Rey also tallied a 6-0, 6-0 win at the fourth position against Cotoros. Pondicas, the team's lone senior, finished with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at fifth singles over Sandy and Colen recorded a 7-5, 6-0 win against Kerns at the sixth slot.
The Vulcans return to action this weekend in the PSAC Tournament. Cal U has won the league title in each of the last six seasons and hasn't suffered a loss against a PSAC opponent since the 2005-06 campaign.
