Cal U collects sweep over Lock Haven

WASHINGTON, Pa. (April 13) – Sophomore Justin Taylor (Julian, Pa./Bald Eagle) tossed a complete-game shutout and junior third baseman Derrik Zeroski (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) finished with five RBI, as the No. 28 Vulcans earned a doubleheader sweep against Lock Haven in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Saturday afternoon at CONSOL Energy Park, winning 4-2 and 11-0.

With the victories, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team improves to 24-8 overall behind a 17-5 record at home. The Vulcans currently boast the best winning percentage in the divisional standings with a 9-1 record. Meanwhile, Lock Haven falls to 11-16 this season behind a 6-8 mark in league play.

In Game 1, sophomore GJ Senchak (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) earned the victory after allowing two unearned runs and scattering nine hits over 6.2 innings (81 pitches). He is tied for the team lead with five wins and paces the team with 52.0 innings this season while making eight starts. Senior Kyle Petty (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) retired the final out of the game to earn his second save of the year and the ninth of his career. Lock Haven sophomore Joe Nestor (1-3) suffered the loss after yielding four runs (all earned) on eight hits and two walks in 6.0 innings (82 pitches).

Lock Haven threatened to score in the first before freshman left fielder Mick Fennell (Butler, Pa./Butler) threw out a runner at home attempting to score from second on a one-out single. After the Bald Eagles scored in the second, the Vulcans answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Junior second baseman Giovanni Morales (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) opened the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt before scoring on an RBI single Zeroski. Zeroski later stole second before senior first baseman AJ Robinson (Milesburg, Pa./Bald Eagle) delivered a two-out, RBI single, 2-1.

The Bald Eagles tied the game in the top of the fourth before sophomore shortstop Matt Peters (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) belted a solo homer, his third of the year, in the bottom of the inning to give the Vulcans a 3-2 lead. Cal U manufactured an insurance run in the sixth when Fennell scored on a sacrifice fly by Morales. Senchak retired the first two batters in the top of the seventh before Lock Haven drew back-to-back walks. The game then ended on a fielder's choice to second base.

Junior right fielder Chuck Gasti (Carmichaels, Pa./Carmichaels) marked his eighth multi-hit game of the season, finishing 2-for-3.

In Game 2, Taylor improved to 5-2 after tossing his third complete-game shutout of the season. He scattered three hits and one walk over 7.0 innings (66 pitches) and allowed just two Bald Eagles to advance into scoring position. Lock Haven starter Alec Jacob (3-3) was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs (two earned) on three hits in 1.0-plus innings.

The Vulcans took a quick 3-0 lead in the first on three hits. Zeroski opened the game with a triple before scoring on an RBI single by junior left fielder John Orr (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler). Robinson reached on a walk and later scored on a fielder's choice before Fennell lined an RBI double down the left-field line. Cal U added another run in the second when Morales scored on a two-out RBI infield single by Petty.

In the fourth, Cal U loaded the bases on two singles and a walk before Zeroski belted a grand slam with two outs, 8-0. The Vulcans then added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to stretch the lead to 11-0 with RBI singles by Peters, junior Ben Carson (Coal Center, Pa./California) and junior Chad Crockett (Gilmanton, N.H./Gilford).

Zeroski finished 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored from the leadoff spot. Peters added two hits and two RBI, while Orr and Petty both collected two hits and one RBI.

The Vulcans continue their weekend series with a doubleheader at Lock Haven tomorrow, Sunday, April 14, at 1 p.m.
