Cal U blanked at West Virginia, 7-0

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (March 8) – Playing its sixth match this spring against an NCAA Division I opponent, the No. 9 California University of Pennsylvania tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss at West Virginia on Friday evening.

With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 4-4 this season with a pair of wins over NCAA Division I programs. Meanwhile, the Mountaineers won their second-straight match to improve to 3-7 overall.

West Virginia claimed the doubles point on Friday after winning two of the three matches. At the first position, junior Lucie Sipkova (Pardubice, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Pardubice Mozartova) and sophomore Lucie Rey (Geneva, Switzerland/Colombieres) suffered an 8-5 loss against Hailey Barrett and Ikttesh Chahal. Sophomore Ramona Czakon (Trier, Germany/Tampereen Lyseon Lukio) and freshman Alexandra Borgenhoff (Alingsas, Sweden/Katrinelund) collected their sixth-straight victory, recording an 8-3 victory at second doubles over Emily Mathis and Audrey Wooland. Senior Jade Pondicas (Johannesburg, South Africa/British International Distance) and freshman Maxime Colen (Breda, Netherlands/Newman) dropped an 8-6 match to Vivian Tsui and Irina Toidze at third doubles.

The Mountaineers clinched the match victory by winning all six singles matches, including five in straight sets. At the first slot, Woodland posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Sipkova and Barrett downed Czakon at second singles by a 6-2, 6-1 count. Chahal outlasted Borgenhoff at the third position to earn a 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 win and Mathis collected a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Rey at the fourth slot. Tsui tallied a 6-2, 6-2 win against freshman Elizabeth Guy (Quebec City, Quebec/Cardinal-Roy) at the fifth singles and Toidze downed Colen at the sixth position by a 6-2, 6-2 count.

Cal U returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, March 9, when it hosts No. 24 New York Institute of Technology at Roadman Park, starting at 12 p.m.
