MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (March 20) – Playing a pair of matches in a unique 5-1 format, the No. 9 California University of Pennsylvania tennis team suffered 7-0 losses to Rutgers and perennial NCAA Division II-power Barry (Fla.) on Wednesday.

With the losses, the Vulcans fall to 6-8 overall this season with all eight losses coming against either NCAA Division I members or nationally-ranked programs. The 5-1 format features five singles matches and one doubles match, which counts as two points, being played simultaneously.

Cal U opened Wednesday with a 7-0 loss against Rutgers (9-5), who has played three NCAA Division II programs while in the greater Miami area this week. In doubles, junior Lucie Sipkova (Pardubice, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Pardubice Mozartova) and sophomore Lucie Rey (Geneva, Switzerland/Colombieres) suffered a 7-6,6 -2 loss to Lindsey Kayati and Mariam Zein. Sophomore Ramona Czakon (Trier, Germany/Tampereen Lyseon Lukio), who was playing at first singles for the first time in her career, was outlasted by Vanessa Petrini by a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 count. At the second position, freshman Alexandra Borgenhoff (Alingsas, Sweden/Katrinelund)  dropped a 6-3, 6-4 match to Gina Li, while senior Jade Pondicas (Johannesburg, South Africa/British International Distance) retired from her match at the third slot versus Stefania Balasa after winning the first set. Freshman Maxime Colen (Breda, Netherlands/Newman) suffered a 6-7, 6-1, 10-8 loss to Noor Judeh at fourth singles, while classmate Elizabeth Guy (Quebec City, Quebec/Cardinal-Roy) was downed by a 6-2, 6-0 count at the fifth position by Lindsay Balsamo.

The Vulcans were swept 7-0 in an afternoon match against No. 4 Barry (17-0), who advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament last year after winning the National Championship in 2011. Borgenhoff and Czakon suffered a 6-3, 6-3 loss in doubles to Linda Fritschken, an All-American last year, and Kimmy Twelker. At first singles, Sipkova was dealt a 6-2, 6-2 defeat by Emma Onila and Rey was outlasted by Elisabeth Abanda at the second slot by a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 margin.
