CALIFORNIA (Dec. 7) – Despite a season-high 26 points from junior guard
Kaitlynn Fratz (Accident,Md./Northern Garrett) the Vulcans lost to Edinboro 81-70 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West game Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
The California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team falls to 2-5 overall and 2-2 in the PSAC West. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots improve to 3-0 in conference play and 4-0 this season.
Fratz exploded with a season-high 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting from the field. The Maryland native has now turned in consecutive double-digit point performances after averaging 1.6 points through the team's opening five games of the year. Senior
Elena Antonenko (Moscow, Russia/State University of Physical Education) registered her first double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while junior
Chelsea McKnight (Grove City, Ohio/Harvest Prep) chipped in 11 points and a team-best four steals in the loss.
Edinboro led the entire first half and took a 35-30 lead into halftime. The Cal U bench carried the team through the first half, scoring 24 of the team's 30 points. The Fighting Scots led by as many as eight points, 24-16, with 7:52 left in the opening frame, but the Vulcans narrowed the gap to five by the break.
The Fighting Scots extended their lead to nine, 44-35, in the opening four minutes of the second half, but a quick five-point spurt by Fratz pulled the Vulcans within four, 44-40, with 15:33 left in the game. Cal U hovered around that deficit for the next four minutes, trailing 51-47 with 11:16 left before Edinboro scored 10-unanswered points in the next four minutes to extend its lead to 13 points, 61-47, with 6:14 remaining in the contest. The Vulcans pulled within as many as nine on multiple occasions in the final six minutes, but couldn't sustain a run to pull back into the game.
Edinboro held the advantage on the glass, out-rebounding Cal U 47-36. The Fighting Scots also converted on their 18 offensive rebounds, out-scoring the Vulcans 29-7 in second-chance points. Cal U struggled from the field, shooting 38.6 percent (27-of-70) for the game, including 11.1 percent (2-of-18) from beyond-the-arc.
The Fighting Scots were led by sophomore Aignee Freeland, who posted double-double with a game-high 31 points and 10 rebounds.
The Vulcans are idle next week before returning to action Dec. 17 when they host West Chester at 5:30 p.m.
