CALIFORNIA (Dec. 18) – The Vulcans used a strong second half to pull past Cheyney, 71-47, Wednesday evening in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play at the Convocation Center.
The win improves the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team to 4-5 overall, while the Wolves drop to 1-8 this season with the loss.

Emma Mahady (Albury, Australia/Xavier) led the Vulcans with 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field, including five-of-seven from beyond the arc. The Australian product also chipped in five rebounds, three assists and two steals in the win. Freshman
Precious Martin (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) established a season high with 11 points, while senior
Ashley Hines (Newark, N.J./Trenton Central) chipped in 10 points.
Both teams had momentum swings in the first half. Cheyney opened with a 7-5 lead in the opening three minutes of the game before the Vulcans went on a 15-6 run over the next six minutes to take a 20-13 lead with 11:06 remaining in the first half. The Wolves countered with an 11-3 run of their own to take a 24-23 lead with 5:44 left in the opening half, but Cal U closed out the half on an 8-1 run to take a 31-24 lead into halftime.
The Vulcans took control of the game after the break, going on a 20-5 run to open the second half and take a 51-29 lead with 9:09 left in the game. Cal U forced Cheyney to commit nine turnovers over that span and held the Wolves without a field-goal until the 14:26-mark of the second half. The Vulcans out-scored Cheyney 20-17 in the final nine minutes of the game to secure the victory.
Although the Vulcans were out-rebounded 40-29, they scored 25 points on 27 turnovers. Cal U also held the edge in shooting percentage, converting on 48.8 percent (27-of-59) from the field, including 43.8 percent (7-of-16) from three-point range. A total of 11 different players converted field-goals for the Vulcans in the win. Cheyney shot 32.0 percent (16-of-50) from the field and were limited to one three-pointer.
Cal U will hit the road to close out the 2013 portion of its schedule on Saturday, Dec. 21, when it travels to Millersville for a PSAC Crossover match-up. Opening tip for the contest is set for 1 p.m.
