CALIFORNIA (Nov. 8) – Junior
Ashley Magruda (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) made three crucial saves in a shootout on Friday afternoon, as the No. 7 and top-seeded Vulcans advanced in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament with a 0-0 double-overtime tie against fifth-seeded Shippensburg at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.
The California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team moves to 16-2-2 overall and will face sixth-seeded West Chester in the PSAC Championship tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 9, at 1 p.m. The Vulcans, who were shutout for only the second time this season, extended their unbeaten streak to 17 games (16-0-1) and advanced to the PSAC Championship for the fourth-straight year (1-1-1).
In the shootout, both teams tallied a goal on their first shot attempt before Magruda made a save on Shippensburg's second shot. The Vulcans then took a 2-1 lead when junior
Chelsea Crockett (Gilmanton, N.H./Gilford) made her attempt. Shippensburg evened the score on its third attempt before junior
Haley Henderson (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton) placed her shot in the top-right corner of the net. Magruda then made back-to-back saves on attempts by the Raiders to clinch the shootout victory.
The Vulcans placed four shot attempts on goal in the first half against the Raiders, who have allowed only one goal in 200 minutes against Cal U this year. With 16 minutes left in regulation, Henderson nearly placed a header to the inside post following a corner kick by junior
Erin Hogan (Beaver, Pa./Beaver). The best scoring opportunity for Cal U was in the 83rd minute when senior
Stephanie Thompson (Queensville, Ontario/Huron Heights Secondary) placed a shot from inside the goalie box, off an indirect kick, to the top corner of the goal that was saved by the Raiders' goalkeeper.
In the first overtime, Shippensburg nearly ended the game with a shot by junior Kate Zech that went off the post, but Magruda quickly recovered to prevent a rebound attempt. Neither team was able to attempt a shot in the second overtime, as Cal U went to a shootout for the first time since the 2010 post-season.
Magruda recorded her seventh shutout of the year, while facing just three shots in 110 minutes of action. The Vulcans finished the game with 14 shot attempts, placing eight shots on goal, and posted a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.
Cal U will host West Chester in the PSAC Championship tomorrow at 1 p.m. The Vulcans and Golden Rams have met in the post-season three times since the 2010 season with two of the games being decided by shootout, including the 2010 PSAC Championship. West Chester advanced to the title game with a 3-0 victory against seventh-seeded Gannon on Friday.
