Women's Basketball earns first win, 79-52

CALIFORNIA (Nov. 23) – The Vulcans earned their first win of the season with a 79-52 victory over Slippery Rock in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.

The win improves the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in divisional play. Meanwhile, The Rock falls to 0-2 in the conference play and 0-5 overall.

Freshman guard Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) led the Vulcans with season highs of 23 points, nine rebounds and six assists. The West Virginia native added a pair of steals and committed only one turnover while playing all 40 minutes.

Junior Irina Kukolj (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) turned in a solid performance with 15 points and eight rebounds off the bench, while junior Chelsea McKnight (Grove City, Pa./Harvest Prep) added 14 points and seven rebounds in the win.

Cal U opened up an 11-4 lead to begin the game, capped off by a layup by senior Elena Antonenko (Moscow, Russia/State University of Physical Education) with 16:07 remaining in the first half. After Slippery Rock closed the gap to three, 16-13, with 10:04 left before the break, the Vulcans rebuilt their lead with an 11-2 run over the next three-plus minutes. Both teams exchanged baskets over the final seven minutes with Cal U taking a 42-33 halftime lead.

The first nine minutes of the second half saw each team respond to scoring spurts, keeping The Rock within striking distance at 56-47 with 10:23 remaining in the contest. The Vulcans put away Slippery Rock over the next six minutes with a 15-2 run to put Cal U up 71-49 with 4:30 left in the game.

The Vulcans shot 82.4 percent (14-of-17) from the free-throw line, including a perfect seven-for-seven by Glenn.
Cal U dominated the glass with 28 offensive rebounds that led to 20 second-chance points. The Vulcans out-rebounded The Rock 48-39 for the game. Slippery Rock committed 26 turnovers compared to the nine committed by Cal U.

Cal U never trailed in the contest while Slippery Rock forced a tie twice. The last time the game was tied was when The Rock evened the score at 4-4 with 18:24 left in the first half.

D'Asia Chambers led Slippery Rock with a double-double performance, registering 14 points and 10 rebounds.

The Vulcans are back in action when they head back to Erie, Pa., for a PSAC West matchup with Mercyhurst on Dec. 4. Tip for the game is set for 5:30 p.m.
