Men's Basketball downed by The Rock, 74-55

CALIFORNIA (Nov. 23) – The California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team lost to Slippery Rock 74-55 Saturday evening in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action at the Convocation Center.

The loss drops the Vulcans to 0-2 in the PSAC West and 1-4 overall. Meanwhile, The Rock improves to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in league play.

Junior Tynell Fortune (Harlem, N.Y./Pocono West (Pa.)) led Cal U and set a new career-high with 20 points and three assists off the bench, while junior Alonzo Murphy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Imani Christian Academy) chipped in 17 points and five rebounds.

Cal U trailed 19-15 following a pair of Fortune free-throws with 6:49 left in the first half, but Slippery Rock closed out the half on a 17-4 run to take a 36-19 lead into halftime.

Neither team sustained a significant run in the second half until the Rock extended their lead to 21, 57-36, following a traditional three-point play with 9:31 left in the game. The Vulcans never came within 15 points of Slippery Rock the remainder of the game.

The Rock shot 45 percent (24-of-53) from the field and 82 percent (23-of-28) from the charity stripe, compared to Cal U who shot 29 percent (17-of-59) from the field.

The Vulcans are back in action Saturday, Nov. 30, when they host West Virginia Wesleyan in a non-conference tilt. Tip is scheduled for 3 p.m.
