ALBANY, N.Y. (Nov. 22) – After entering play yielding only eight goals all season, the No. 6 Vulcans allowed three second-half goals in a 3-0 loss to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) rival and No. 12 Slippery Rock on Friday afternoon in the third round of the NCAA Tournament at the Plumeri Sports Complex.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team finishes the year with an 18-3-2 overall record. The Vulcans posted the third-most wins in school history and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in the last five years. Meanwhile, The Rock improves to 15-3-2 this season and will face No. 13 American International (Mass.) in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 24, in Albany, N.Y.
The Vulcans threatened with one of their best scoring chances of the game in the 33rd minute, but a shot attempt by junior
Jordan Gray (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair Secondary) missed wide right. In the final minute of the half, Gray placed a corner kick in front of the net before Rock goalkeeper Dana O'Neill fell on the ball in a scramble. The teams entered the break scoreless while the Vulcans held a 6-3 advantage in shots and 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Slippery Rock took a 1-0 lead in the 68th minute when freshman Dara Demich scored her 10th goal of the year following a collision between freshman goalkeeper
Meghan Jayes (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) and a defender. The Rock looked to add to their lead at the 79:37-mark before Jayes made a diving save to preserve the one-goal deficit.
However, Slippery Rock later scored a pair of goals in less than a minute. Demich recorded her second unassisted goal of the game at the 83:18-mark and senior Lauren Impey, the PSAC Defensive Athlete of the Year, added an insurance goal on a direct kick just moments after Cal U was issued a yellow card.
Jayes finished with four saves while facing nine shots in the losing effort and O'Neill, a two-time All-PSAC First-Team goalkeeper, registered three saves in the shutout. Cal U finished the game with a 13-9 shot advantage and posted a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
Cal U and Slippery Rock have met in the NCAA Tournament in each of the last four seasons, including twice in the third round while playing in Albany, N.Y.
