ERIE, Pa. (Nov. 20) – In a rematch of last season's NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship, the Vulcans trailed by two points at halftime before suffering a 73-64 loss to No. 2 Gannon at the Hammermill Center on Wednesday evening in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West-opener for both teams.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team falls to 0-4 this season and 0-1 in divisional play. The first four opponents for the Vulcans this season compiled nearly 100 wins last year with a pair of teams advancing to their respective NCAA regional finals. Meanwhile, Gannon improves to 3-0 this year after returning all five starters from a 30-win team last season.
Freshman guard
Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) led the team with 13 points before fouling out after playing a season-high 27 minutes. She made four-of-nine attempts from the floor, including three-of-four from beyond the arc, and added four assists in her second career start.
Senior forward
Elena Antonenko (Moscow, Russia/State University of Physical Education) scored 12 points (10 first half) after shooting five-of-nine from the field and also totaled seven rebounds (three offensive). Junior
Irina Kukolj (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) added nine points while making seven-of-eight from the free-throw line and collected four rebounds and two steals off the bench.
Trailing 16-12, the Vulcans mounted a 12-3 run over nearly four minutes to take a 24-19 lead on a layup by Glenn with 9:23 left in the first half. Gannon then scored eight-straight points to reclaim the lead at 27-24 with 6:10 remaining before halftime. The teams traded the lead through the rest of first half with the Lady Knights taking a 35-33 lead into the break.
Gannon seized control of the game early in the second half by mounting a 17-3 run to take a 52-36 lead, as Cal U was limited to only one field goal in 10-plus minutes. After both teams scored five-straight points, the Vulcans engineered a 12-3 rally to trim the deficit to 60-53 with 3:33 left to play. Cal U worked the lead down to 67-62 on a three-pointer by Glenn with 29 seconds remaining before Gannon sealed the victory by making all six free-throws in the closing seconds.
The Vulcans finished the game shooting 32.8 percent (22-of-67) from the floor compared to 50 percent (19-of-38) by the Lady Knights. Gannon held a substantial advantage from the charity stripe, making 32-of-45 attempts (71.1 percent), while Cal U finished 11-of-17 (64.7 percent) from the free-throw line. The Vulcans scored 27 second-chance points after recording 19 offensive rebounds.
Junior Brittany Batts scored a game-high 19 points behind three-of-four from long range and 10-of-10 from the free-throw line. Senior Jen Papich, the reigning PSAC West Athlete of the Year, finished with 14 points and six rebounds, while classmate Kelley Sundberg added 13 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Cal U returns to the Convocation Center on Saturday, Nov. 23, when it hosts Slippery Rock in PSAC West action at 3:30 p.m.
