CLARION, Pa. (Nov. 2) – The Vulcans suffered their first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) blemish of the season, a 3-2 loss (26-24, 23-25, 22-25, 25-20, 19-17) at Clarion Saturday afternoon.
The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team falls to 23-5 overall and 16-1 in conference play, maintaining a share of first place in the PSAC West with the Golden Eagles. Meanwhile, Clarion moves into a tie for first in the PSAC West at 16-1 and improves to 27-2 overall.
Junior
Laurel Miller (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) led the Vulcan attack and defensive efforts with team highs of 25 kills, her second-highest total of the season, and 21 digs.
Sophomore
Mary Lavery (La Plata, Md./La Plata) paced Miller with 12 kills and four blocks, while both classmate
Miranda Fouzie (Kingston, Ontario/Sydenham) and senior
Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) each chipped in nine kills. Delaney also added 13 digs and three blocks, while Fouzie tallied four blocks.
Freshman
Kristen Scurpa guided the offense and tied a season high with 55 of the team's 60 assists and added 12 digs.
The fifth set featured 12 tie scores and four lead changes. Cal U had match point three times in the set. Clarion trailed 17-16 before it rallied off three-straight points to move into a tie with the Vulcans for first place in the PSAC West.
The Vulcans will begin a three-game home stand with Seton Hill on Tuesday, Nov. 5. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Hamer Hall.
