Cal U cruises to win in NCAA Tournament, 6-1

CALIFORNIA (Nov. 17) – Junior Erin Hogan (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) recorded a career-high six points on Sunday afternoon, as the No. 6 and top-seeded Vulcans earned a 6-1 victory over fifth-seeded Kutztown in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team improves to 18-2-2 overall and extends its unbeaten streak to 19 games (18-0-1). The Vulcans also posted an unbeaten home record for the third time in school history, finishing the year with an 11-0-1 record. Cal U will now face No. 12 Slippery Rock in the third round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, Nov. 22, in Albany, N.Y. Meanwhile, Kutztown finishes the year with a 13-7-0 mark after making its fourth appearance in five years in the NCAA Tournament.

Hogan finished with six points after collecting a pair of goals and assists in the victory. With her performance, she moved into a tie for second place in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) history with 43 career assists, which also ranks as the second-most assists among active players in NCAA Division II. Hogan also moved passed Sam Regney (2008-10) for sixth all-time in school history 67 points behind a career-high six goals this year.

The Vulcans raced out to a quick 2-0 lead in the opening five minutes of the game on Sunday. Cal U scored its first goal just 91 seconds into the game, as junior Haley Henderson (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton) scored on a header off a corner kick by Hogan. Fellow junior Chelsea Crockett (Gilmanton, N.H./Gilford) added to the lead at the 4:31-mark with her eighth goal of the year off a feed by senior Kesley Russo (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel).

Hogan then scored a pair of back-to-back goals on assists from Crockett with the first coming in the 12th minute after the Kutztown goalkeeper had the ball roll through her legs after initially making the stop. She stretched the lead to 4-0 in the 29th minute when she scored from far down the right side of the box; the goal also resulted in a goalkeeper change for the Golden Bears. Junior Bethany Smyda (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) split two defenders in the middle of the box at the 37:51-mark for her fourth goal of the year following a pass from Jordan Gray (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair Secondary).With the goal,  Smyda moved into sole possession of sixth place in school history with 25 career goals and into a tie with Regney for seventh overall with 66 career points.

Cal U scored its final goal of the game in the 70th minute when sophomore Janelle McCann (Burlington, Vt./Tilton School) tallied her eighth goal of the year off a cross by Hogan. The Golden Bears avoided the shutout in the 85th minute with a goal by junior Hanna Fenstermacher on a header off a free kick, which marked the first goal allowed by the Vulcans in nearly 1,100 minutes at home this season.

Junior goalkeeper Ashley Magruda (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) earned the victory while making two saves in the first half before freshman Meghan Jayes (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) made one save in the final 45 minutes. Cal U finished the game with a 13-7 shot advantage, scoring on five of eight attempts in the first half.

The Vulcans have advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in the last five years. Cal U will face Slippery Rock for the second time this year after The Rock earned a 2-1 victory in the season-opener on Sept. 5. The third round and quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament will be hosted in Albany, N.Y., by No. 4 Saint Rose, who has advanced to the semifinals of the tournament in five-consecutive years, winning the 2011 National Championship.
