Cal U knocked off at Wayne State, 77-62

DETROIT (Nov. 17) – The California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team was defeated at Wayne State (Mich.), 77-62, Sunday afternoon in a non-conference game.

The loss drops the Vulcans to 0-3 overall this season, while the Warriors open their season at 1-0.

Junior Emma Mahady (Albury, Australia/Xavier) matched her career high and led Cal U with 23 points on 8-of-16 shooting, including three-for-six from three-point range. Senior Ryah Gadson (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) finished with 14 points, while classmate Elena Antonenko (Moscow, Russia/State University of Physical Education) was a rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Wayne State opened the game on a 13-0 run before Mahady gave the Vulcans' their first bucket on a jump shot with 15:04 left in the first half. Cal U was forced to play from behind for the remainder of the half and came within 10 points on a three-pointer by junior Chelsea McKnight (Grove City, Ohio/Harvest Prep) that made the score 33-23 with 3:24 remaining before the break. However, the Warriors closed the frame on an 11-4 run to take a 44-27 lead into the half.

The Vulcans were unable to chip into the Wayne State lead in the first 10 minutes of the second half, as the host extended its lead to 65-41 with 10:07 remaining in the game. However, Cal U mounted its best stretch of the game, a 12-3 run over the next five minutes, to cut the lead to 68-53 with 4:28 left in the contest. Wayne State never allowed the Vulcans to get any closer and held on for the victory.

Cal U shot 32 percent from the field (22-of-69), including 47 percent from three-point territory (7 of 15) in the loss. Meanwhile, the Warriors converted 54 percent of its attempts (31-of-57).

Wayne State was led by junior Shareta Brown, who tallied a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds.

The Vulcans will begin Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Wednesday, Nov. 20, when they travel to Gannon. Tip-off from the Hammermill Center is set for 5:30 p.m.
