CALIFORNIA (Oct. 4) – After losing the third and fourth sets, the Vulcans recovered and won a decisive fifth set to edge out Clarion, 3-2 (25-20, 25-23, 22-25, 17-25, 15-12), Friday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play at Hamer Hall.
The win improves the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team to 5-0 in the PSAC, 12-4 overall. Meanwhile, Clarion, who had not been defeated since the semifinals of last season's NCAA Tournament, lost for the first time this season to fall to 14-1 overall and 4-1 in league play.
Junior
Laurel Miller (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) led the Cal U attack once again with 17 kills on 41 attempts (.244 hitting percentage) and chipped in 14 digs, while senior
Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) had her sixth kill/dig double-double of the season with 14 kills and 18 digs. Miller and freshman
Cheyenne Rose (Lancaster, Ohio/Harvest Prep) each finished with three service aces.
Defensively, sophomore
Samantha Rudy (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) led the Vulcans with 26 digs, while freshman
Julie Henderson guided the offense with a team-high 40 assists.
Cal U opened up a 2-0 lead, but had a hitting percentage of just .026 in the third set, including 10 errors, which opened the door for Clarion. After the Eagles evened the match score with a fourth-set win, the Vulcans rallied for a fifth set win behind a .333 hitting percentage to pick up their fifth PSAC win.
Cal U concludes its eight-match homestand with IUP tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 5. First serve at Hamer Hall is scheduled for 2 p.m.
