Cal U outlasts Fairmont State, 3-2

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 1) – Behind a career-high 27 kills by junior Laurel Miller (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team outlasted Fairmont State on Tuesday night for a 3-2 victory (25-15, 22-25, 31-33, 25-18, 15-8) at the Convocation Center.

With the win, the Vulcans extend their winning streak to 10 matches and improve to 11-3 overall. Cal U also now boasts a 31-2 mark at home under third-year head coach Peter Letourneau. Meanwhile, the Fighting Falcons falls to 12-3 this season after entering the night on a four-match winning streak.

Miller led all players with 27 kills on a staggering 73 attempts on Tuesday night. She recorded the highest single-match kill total since Joanna Nist tallied 28 kills in August 2007. Miller also collected 17 digs against Fairmont State to finish with her fifth kill/dig double-double of the season.

Sophomore Miranda Fouzie (Kingston, Ontario/Sydenham) established a career high with 13 kills while hitting at a .455 clip and added five blocks in the victory. Senior Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) and sophomore Mary Lavery (La Plata, Md./La Plata) both finished with eight kills and Lavery also assisted on five blocks.

The Vulcans featured five players in double-digit digs while playing their first five-set match of the season. Sophomore libero Samantha Rudy Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) led all players and tied her career high with 26 digs, while Lavery and freshman Julie Henderson (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton) both established career highs with 23 and 21 digs, respectively. Delaney, who was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Athlete of the Week earlier in the day, added 20 digs and Miller finished with 17 digs against Fairmont State.

Henderson recorded her third-straight assist/dig double-double, as she collected 54 assists in the victory.

Cal U returns to action tomorrow, Wednesday, Oct. 2, when it hosts rival Wheeling Jesuit in the Convocation Center at 7 p.m. The Vulcans and Cardinals have played for the regional title in the NCAA Tournament in each of the last two seasons.
