Cal U rolls past Clarion, 69-44

CALIFORNIA (Jan. 30) – The California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team made 11 three-pointers, including a career-high six by senior Stephanie Michael (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown), on Wednesday evening en route posting a 66-49 victory against Clarion at the Convocation Center in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 13-5 this season with a 9-5 mark in league play. Cal U has now won three-straight games by a combined 52 points after losing its previous three games.  The Vulcans have also now won 18-consecutive home games over the Golden Eagles with their last loss coming in 1998. Meanwhile, Clarion falls to 9-11 overall behind a 5-9 record in conference action.

Michael scored a game-high 18 points after making six-of-nine attempts from beyond the arc. She is the first Cal U player to make at least six three-pointers in a game since Lindsay Johnson accomplished the feat twice during the 2008-09 season. Michael has scored a combined 35 points over the last two games and leads the team in scoring this year at 12.7 points per game.

Sophomore guard Chelsea McKnight (Grove City, Ohio/Harvest Prep) tied her season high with 16 points off the bench after shooting 6-of-10 from the floor, including a season-high four three-pointers. Junior Ashley Hines (Newark, N.J./Trenton Central) added 10 points, five rebounds and three assists off the bench and classmate Kate Seebohm (Millicent, Australia/Millicent) tied her season high with seven assists.

The Vulcans opened the game with eight-unanswered points before the Golden Eagles trimmed the deficit to 12-11 with 12:33 left before the break. Cal U countered with a 7-1 rally to take a 19-12 lead before Clarion managed to tie the game 25-25 at halftime.

In the second half, Clarion claimed its first lead of the game before Michael made a trey on three-consecutive possessions to give Cal U a 37-29 lead with 15:58 remaining. The Vulcans stretched their lead to double-digits before a jumper by the Golden Eagles cut the deficit to 44-35 with 9:37 left to play. Cal U then mounted a 15-0 rally over four-plus minutes to take a 59-35 lead before leading by as many 30 points, 67-37. Clarion was held without a field goal for over eight minutes before making three baskets in the final 90 seconds. 

The Vulcans finished the game shooting 45.6 percent (26-of-57) from the field, including a season-high 57.9 percent (11-of-19) from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles made only 28.9 percent (13-of-45) from the floor. The Vulcans held a 35-31 rebounding advantage and scored 22 points off turnovers.

Clarion sophomore Hannah Heeter led the team with 13 points and six rebounds while playing 39 minutes. Guards Emma Fickel and Mariah Gador each added eight points in the losing effort.

Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 2, when it travels to face Mercyhurst in Erie, Pa., at 1 p.m.
