Women's Basketball tops Lock Haven, 70-60

CALIFORNIA (Jan. 26) – Behind a combined 35 points from sophomore Emma Mahady (Albury, Australia/Xavier) and senior Stephanie Michael (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown), the Vulcans earned a 71-60 win over Lock Haven on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.

With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 12-5 overall and 8-5 in league action. Cal U has now won all 20 meetings against Lock Haven since the 2002-03 season. Meanwhile, the Bald Eagles fall to 6-11 this season behind a 3-10 mark in conference play.

Mahady led all scorers and tied her career high with 18 points on Saturday. She made 7-of-14 attempts from the field and converted three-of-three from the free-throw line. In the win, Mahady also collected five rebounds and five steals, which ties a career high.

Michael finished with 17 points on five-of-eight shooting from the floor and six-of-six from the charity stripe. She led the team with four assists while playing 39 minutes.

Junior forward Ashley Hines (Newark, N.J./Trenton Central) registered her third double-double of the season, and first since Dec. 1, posting 12 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. Sophomore Irina Kukolj (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) added 10 points, four rebounds and three assists in the victory.

Cal U started the game on a 13-4 rally after Michael scored eight of her 11 first-half points in the opening five-plus minutes. The Bald Eagles later mounted a 15-6 run over five minutes to take a 24-23 lead with 5:09 left in the first half. After a basket by Cal U, Lock Haven closed the half on a 7-3 rally to take a 32-27 lead at the break.

The Vulcans opened the second half with a 20-5 run over nearly seven minutes to take a 47-37 lead with 13:12 remaining. During the rally, Cal U made 9-of-15 attempts from the field and Mahady scored nine of her 11 second-half points. The Vulcans worked the lead to 11 points, 51-40, before the Bald Eagles scored five-straight points to trim the deficit to 51-45 with 10:47 remaining. Cal U later sealed the game with a 12-4 rally over four-plus minutes to take a 69-54 lead with 3:30 left to play.

Cal U finished the game shooting 41.7 percent (25-of-60) from the field and a season-high 90.0 percent (18-of-20) from the free-throw line. Lock Haven posted similar marks, making 40.7 percent (22-of-54) from the floor and 86.7 percent (13-of-15) from the charity stripe. The Vulcans out-rebounded the Bald Eagles by a 38-30 margin and scored 40 points from in the paint.

Junior forward Kelsey Ryan led Lock Haven with 14 points, while senior Kacie Hershey posted a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.

The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 30, when they host Clarion at the Convocation Center at 5:30 p.m.
