SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (Jan. 23) – Junior forward
Elena Antonenko (Moscow, Russia/State University of Physical Education) registered her first career double-double on Wednesday evening, as the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 75-58 victory at Slippery Rock in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.
With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 11-5 this season with a 7-5 mark in league play. Cal U has also now won 22-consecutive meetings against Slippery Rock with the last loss coming in the 2001-02 season. Meanwhile, The Rock falls to 4-12 overall behind a 3-9 record in conference action.
Antonenko scored a team-high 16 points and collected a career-high 14 rebounds (six offensive) on Wednesday. She made 8-of-15 from the floor while making her fourth start of the year. Antonenko scored in double-digits for the first time since Dec. 18 and finished just one point shy of tying her career high.
Sophomore
Emma Mahady (Albury, Australia/Xavier) finished with 14 points and four assists, while junior
Kate Seebohm (Millicent, Australia/Millicent) totaled 12 points, six assists and three steals. Fellow junior
Ashley Hines (Newark, N.J./Trenton Central) added 10 points and nine rebounds off the bench.
Both teams started slowly on Wednesday, as they combined for only seven points in the first five minutes. The teams then traded baskets until Cal U broke an 11-11 tie with eight-straight points to take a 19-11 lead on a three-pointer by Seebohm with 9:22 left in the first half. The Vulcans later scored six-unanswered points to take 31-18 lead following a jumper by Mahady with 4:08 remaining. Following three-straight baskets by Slippery Rock, Cal U countered with a 6-0 run to take a 38-24 lead at halftime. Antonenko and Seebohm each scored 10 points in the first half after shooting a combined 9-of-14 from the field.
The Rock opened the second half on a 9-2 run to trim the deficit to 40-33 with 17:14 remaining. After a pair of Cal U baskets, Slippery Rock mounted a 16-6 rally to cut the deficit to 50-49 with 9:14 left to play. The Vulcans responded with an 8-0 run to take a 58-49 lead after a jumper by Seebohm with 7:13 remaining. Cal U later posted a 15-2 rally to seal the victory and stretch the lead to 75-55 with only 45 seconds left to play.
The Vulcans posted their best shooting performance in nearly two weeks, making 41.9 percent (31-of-74) from the floor and 29.4 percent (5-of-17) from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, The Rock shot 50.0 percent (26-of-52) from the field and just 28.6 percent (two-of-seven) from the free-throw line. Cal U committed a season-low nine turnovers and scored 18 second-chance points after posting a 40-35 rebound advantage.
Junior guard Alexas Brown scored a game-high 18 points in the loss, while senior Erinne Cunningham added 14 points and five rebounds.
Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 26, when it hosts Lock Haven at 1 p.m.
