Vulcans fall at No. 6 Gannon, 65-53

ERIE, Pa. (Jan. 19) – Facing their second nationally-ranked opponent this week, the Vulcans suffered a 65-53 loss to No. 6 Gannon at the Hammermill Center on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.

With its third-straight loss, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team falls to 10-5 overall and 6-5 in league action. The Vulcans are now just 2-10 all-time against the Golden Knights at the Hammermill Center. Meanwhile, Gannon improves to 16-2 this season behind a 10-1 mark in conference play.

Junior forward Ashley Hines (Newark, N.J./Trenton Central) led the team with 11 points and eight rebounds (five offensive) off the bench. She posted her highest scoring game since Dec. 8 while playing just 10 minutes on Saturday. Hines remains among the league leaders with 7.9 rebounds per game despite starting just one game.

Senior Stephanie Michael (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) and junior Kate Seebohm (Millicent, Australia/Millicent) both finished with nine points in the loss. Seebohm, who ranks second in the league in assists this season, finished with six assists before fouling out and Michael added four steals.

With the scored tied, the Vulcan mounted a 10-1 run to take a 20-11 lead following a three-pointer by sophomore Chelsea McKnight (Grove City, Ohio/Harvest Prep) with 8:47 left in the first half. The two teams then traded three-pointers before Gannon scored six-straight points to cut the deficit to 20-17 with 7:08 remaining. Seebohm made a jumper at the 6:04-mark to give the Vulcans a 22-17 lead before the Golden Knights closed the first half on an 11-0 run to take a 28-22 lead into the break.

Early in the second half, Gannon stretched its lead to 10 points before Michael made a jumper with 18:09 left to stop a nearly eight-minute scoreless drought, 32-24. The Golden Knights worked their lead to 12 points, 40-28, before the Vulcans scored six-straight points to trim the deficit to 40-34 after a pair of free-throws by Michael with 12:49 remaining. Gannon countered with a 9-2 run to take a 49-36 with 8:48 left and maintained a double-digit lead for nearly the remainder of the game.

The Vulcans finished the game shooting 32.8 percent (20-of-61) from the field despite making just 7.7 percent (2-of-26) from three-point territory. The Golden Knights made 40.9 percent (18-of-44) from the floor and 72.7 percent (26-of-36) from the free-throw line. Gannon posted a 41-32 rebounding advantage and scored 20 points off turnovers.

Junior Jen Papich led the Golden Knights with 19 points and collected eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Brittany Batts finished with 13 points in the victory.

Cal U continues its road trip on Wednesday, Jan. 23, when it travels to face Slippery Rock at 6 p.m.
