No. 20 Cal U tops Millersville, 5-1

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 19) – The No. 20 Vulcans scored three goals in a span of 11-plus minutes during the first period on Wednesday night en route to posting a 5-1 victory over Millersville in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action at the Phillipsburg Complex.

With its third-straight win, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team improves to 5-1 overall with a 3-0 mark in league play. The Vulcans also extended their unbeaten streak against PSAC teams in the regular season to 20 games (18-0-2). Meanwhile, the Marauders fall to 3-3 this year with a 1-3 record in conference action.

Millersville took an early 1-0 lead in the 12th minute on a goal by sophomore Kristin Lepley, who registered a hat trick last Saturday. The Vulcans quickly responded with a goal at the 14:04-mark by junior Kelsey Russo (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Fox Chapel) off an assist from sophomore Haley Henderson (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton). Sophomore Erin Hogan (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) then tallied an unassisted goal in the 21st minute before Henderson scored her team-leading sixth goal of the year at the 25:25-mark with an assist from junior Stephanie Thompson (Queensville, Ontario/Huron Heights Secondary).

In the 43rd minute, Cal U increased the lead to 4-1 on a goal by redshirt sophomore Bethany Smyda (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) off a feed from freshman Kara Novotny (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford). Following the break, the Vulcans added to their lead with an unassisted goal by Russo at the 62:23-mark.

Sophomore Ashley Magruda (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon), who allowed her first goal at home this season, made one save in the victory. Millersville starter Olivia Webber suffered the loss after allowing four goals and finishing with three saves in 45 minutes.

The Vulcans continue league play on Saturday, Sept. 22, when they travel to face West Chester at 12 p.m. The two teams have accounted for the last three PSAC and NCAA regional titles.
