LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (April 14) – The California University of Pennsylvania baseball team was limited to only one run on Saturday afternoon, as it dropped both games of a doubleheader at Lock Haven in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action, falling 5-1 and 5-0.
After losing three of four games this weekend, the Vulcans fall to 22-16 this season. Cal U is now tied with Gannon and Mercyhurst for first place in the divisional standings with a 10-6 mark. Meanwhile, the Bald Eagles improve to 15-22-1 overall behind a 9-11 record in league play.
In Game 1, freshman
Justin Taylor (Julian, Pa./Bald Eagle) suffered the loss after allowing a season-high five runs (three earned) on 11 hits in 5.0-plus innings (78 pitches). Lock Haven starter Brandon Renoll (2-4) earned the complete-game victory, yielding one run (earned) on six hits in 7.0 innings (85 pitches).
After a scoreless first, the Bald Eagles scored a run in both the second and third to take a 2-0 lead. Lock Haven added a pair of runs in the fourth after benefiting from a two-out error, 4-0. In the fifth, the Vulcans cut into the deficit with a two-out RBI single by freshman catcher
Will Kaufman (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry). Lock Haven countered with an insurance run in the sixth after opening the inning with back-to-back hits.
Kaufman collected his second multi-hit game of the season, finishing 2-for-3 with one RBI.
In the nightcap, freshman
GJ Senchak (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) was saddled with the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits in 2.2 innings (50 pitches). Bald Eagles' Collin Mills (4-1) tossed a five-hit, complete-game shutout and recorded six shutouts in 7.0 innings (94 pitches).
Lock Haven took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third behind four singles, one sacrifice bunt and one error. In the fifth, the Bald Eagles added a pair of runs to stretch the lead to 5-0. After having only one base runner in the first five innings, Cal U loaded the bases in the sixth before Mills prevented a run from scoring.
The Vulcans are scheduled to return to the diamond with a non-conference doubleheader at Davis & Elkins on Wednesday, April, 18, starting at 1 p.m.
