No. 11 Vulcans cruise past GW, 5-2

MONTCLAIR, Va. (March 24) – The No. 11 Vulcans claimed their third win of the season against an NCAA Division I opponent, as they posted a 5-2 victory over George Washington on Saturday evening at the Montclair Country Club.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team improves to 11-5 overall. Meanwhile, George Washington falls to 6-6 this season.

The Vulcans captured the doubles point by winning two of the three doubles matches against the Colonials on Saturday. At the first position, seniors Martina Rubesova (Usti nad Labem, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Dr. Vaclava Smejkala) and Franziska Steinhardt (Bad Lausick, Germany/St. Augustin Gymnasium) extended their win streak to six matches by posting an 8-4 victory against GW's Mimi Hamling and Zoe Krohn. Senior Annabel Pieschl (Gothenburg, Sweden/Katrinelund) and junior Jade Pondicas (Johannesburg, South Africa/British International Distance) suffered an 8-5 loss at second doubles to Isabella Escobar and Leah Pascarella. At the third slot, senior Anastassiya Zherdeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Gumnasia Number 60) and freshman Ramona Czakon (Trier, Germany/Tampereen Lyseon Lukio) earned a 9-8 victory over Jacqueline Corba and Meg Tyner.

Cal U secured the match victory by winning four of the six singles match in Virginia. At the first position, No. 5 Rubesova collected a 6-3, 6-1 victory against Corba on Sunday. Pieschl, the No. 30 singles player in the country, rallied to a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 win over Pascarella at the second slot, while No. 31 Pondicas posted a 6-3, 7-5 victory against Hamling at third singles.

The Colonials posted a win at the fourth position when Julia Blakeley dealt Zherdeva a 6-3, 6-1 defeat. Steinhardt registered a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the fifth slot, while freshman Jesse Burrell (Perth, Australia/Presbyterian Ladies' College) dropped a 6-2, 6-3 contest to GW's Tyner at sixth singles.

Cal U returns to action on Tuesday, March 27, when it opens Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play by hosting Edinboro at 3:30 p.m.
